Preperations
Well i finnaly got my 05' base last week and i know its driftable stock. My question is what advice can you guys give me from experience for a noob drifter. I know the basics but i just want second opinions from other z drfters

it is not a must to have an lsd it is def possible with out it..
thats my boy tim with a base with an open rear end and he drifts the poop out of it..same with our s14..BG Tell em'

One wheel will spin occasionally instead of both. Save yourself the trouble and get an lsd. Or weld yours :-p. Good luck, and try to keep it on the track :-p. ****ing up your 20k car cant be fun.

It is more than possible to slide open diff, ive got plenty of friends who do it, and do it well. But im not a fan.
The 350Z is an excellent car to drift with. From the factory, it's a tuned car. It comes with front and rear strut tower bars, chasis bracing, a carbon fiber driveshaft, aluminium hood, zero-lift aerodynamics...I could go on and on. However, with that stiff chasis and all that power comes a few problems. Most which can be fixed, usually with money.
1. It's very heavy
2. It understeers horribly on the stock suspension
3. The factory VLSD sucks
4. The stock wheels are narrow
5. If you have a model with VDC, (TCS OK) it never truly turns off
The first thing you should do is upgrade to a clutch-type LSD. If you have a base model, you won't have an LSD and if you have any of the other models, you'll soon learn how much the VLSD sucks. The second upgrade should be suspension. The factory suspension not only is plagued by understeer, but it sits on progressive springs which are unpredictable when drifting. The third upgrade should be wheels. 8 inches wide is to small to for the size rubber this car needs for it's horspower and weight.
Of course I'm speaking from my experience with a 2004 Enthusiast model. I know that the newer 350z's have different wheels and possibly a revised suspension.

well my first initial upgrade was gonna be suspension but the lsd is a muST, as i found out by almost killing my buddy hahahaha. Im going to have to go with the lsd first it seems. Seeing as theyre all almost a grand i must wait. Thanx for the info Lawn i really appreciate it.

you dont have to get an lsd, a decent driver can do wonders with a stock Z. for example Blake Fuller i have seen him teach his sideways school (drift school) with completely stock Z's and him, myself and some others are all fully capable of drifting a stock Z in a fashion that would qualify top 16
ive drifted numerous stock Z's on courses that are similar but smaller than irwindale with no problem
a stock z is actually one of the best working and feeling drift cars ive ever driven
that being said,
if you plan to do any kind of competition events, get an lsd as it will ensure reliability of both wheels spinning
coilovers help dramatically too
also keep in mind that its very easy to ruin the driftability of a stock z by doing the wrong modifications

An addition to my plan was never to upgrade the engine only for response and airlfow. The Z has the perfect if not too much power to drift. i was mainly gonna do, from the getgo, what lawn dart suggested. Suspension, lsd and wheels. Thanks for you help Nick
240's do it all the time...It's like a clutch type lsd stuck on lock; i.e, the tires will chirp with low speed tight turns (parking lot, etc.)...I know some company sells a locking mechanism to put in your diff that isnt permanent...If your gonna go through the trouble of taking out the pumpkin and dismantaling the diff (its a pain in the ***), do it right...The nismo 1.5 way totally transformed my car for the better
