Ok thanks for the input guys...

My first two axles I cracked the CV cup... causing axle grease to spew everywhere... then my third one I ripped the boot...





My first welded that I bought crapped out on me...



Then it got it done the right way at blu808

How would a welded diff be compared to a shimmed VLSD? I have an open diff and a VLSD that I picked up recently and don't know which route to go. There's not much talk about Shimming the VLSD on this forum.

My guess is just ordering the right size shim from the dealer (around 10 bucks IIRC) and installing it. From what i remember reading there is no real set "size" of shim that everyone can run, it varies from dif to dif...

Someone correct me if im wrong?

I have driven my Maxima for 5 years with a welded diff FWD which is harder to turn that a welded RWD. Sure it jumps a bit and squeals on tight turns but on the road its invisible. It has run a 10.85 @ 125 mph on spray with 22x8x15 MT slicks.

I know this thread is 2 years old but here's how I welded my diff. Instead of just welding the spider gears by their teeth (prone to breakage over time as shown above), I welded the gears to the gear housing on all four gears, front and back. This way, you can weld longer beads and increase the strength of the welds for more mad skids

I know this post is old as dirt....or molasses...or Methuselah, but which bushings NEED to be replaced other than the diff bushings. I've got those and once this artic tundra and perma-frost thaws, I'll tighten everything up. But, I figure now is as good a time as any to get my fundages together for whatever bushings I really need to replace. This isn't a daily. It's a sometimes in the summery but at least 2 weekends out of a month, 4ish months out of the year.
