Default Rear Differential from 370z

Up for sale is a rear differential from a 370z with approx 50k miles. It's in great condition and I bought it hoping to fit a 4.08 ring and pinion to replace the 3.7 but it didn't work. Only things missing are the axle shafts, but the guy who was going to install it for me said most of the axle shafts in your 350z/370z will work for this. Asking 400 OBO plus shipping costs. PM me if interested. It has the limited slip and the posi so all the power goes to both rear wheels, huge upgrade for a base 350z.

Why wouldn't the 4.08 work? Several 370Z owners installed the 4.08 gears with no problems.

I took my 4.08 gears to a rear differential specialist and he said he tried everything but couldnt get it to fit. He said the 4.08 ring and pinion i had were too thick to fit in there... He works on them everyday so I assumed he knew what he was doing

Yeah that sounds sketchy.

BTW for this to work on a base 350Z you'll need at least one real outputshaft from a VLSD equipped Z.

Alright, I've read a few more threads about this and from what I've read is that everyone who has done this gear ratio swap used the 4.08 gear ratios from a 2006 Frontier. I believe the gear rations I have came out of a 2005 Frontier. Can anyone verify if the 2005 ring and pinion will work with the 370z swap ? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

that i do not know. i just order the ones that will work in a 350z. now if you have the wrong ones that is a possible reason they will not work.

The 350Z and 370Z differentials both use the same ring/pinion sets so if the 4.08's don't work on a 350 then they won't work on the 370 either. Hope that helps, good luck!

actually only the frontiers came with the only the 4.083 that will fit. But the earlier 240 had a 4.083 that is smaller.

Yeah I know the 4.08 came from a manual nissan frontier, the guy who checked out my 370z rear diff took the whole thing apart and tried doing a bunch of things but said he couldnt get it to fit. He didn't even charge me, so that's why I was bummed out because he seems like he knows a lot about rear diffs

its pretty easy to check for yourself. pull the cover off. take out the diff. remember which shims go on which side. compare the ring gears. it should be as simple as that. maybe he just didn't want to get involved in it which is probably better that way you don't end up with a set of messed up gears.

Incorrect. All documentation indicates the automatics came with a 3.357, which makes it identical to the 350Z/G35 automatic carrier assembly. The same 4.083 that fits in the manual carrier does not fit in the 3.357 carrier. It's the wrong gear or the wrong carrier.

Where did you buy the pumpkin, and can it be verified that it is indeed from a manual car?

EDIT: All G37 minus the convertible came with 3.692. Unless it was a 7AT, then it came with a 3.357.

Basically, 7AT has 3.357. 5AT(G37 only) has 3.692. All manuals have 3.692. Unless G37 convertible, then 3.9xx.

Well then ill admit if I am wrong but lol didn't even know they came with a 7at now. When I purchased my uncles g37 awd which was an auto. The serial number by the dealership showed it came with a 3.7. They told me all the newer models came with 3.7 so that's what I based what I said off of. even though i am wrong. isnt it still the same pumpkin he just needs a 3.5 vlsd or lsd?? im pretty sure it will still work.
