Default MSRP difference between US and Canada

Hey guys,
Been reading this forum for a little while now, and decided to finally make my first post . I was wondering, why is there such a big difference in MSRP between US and Canada? For the 2006 Base 350z

USA : $29,700(CND) ---> $27,000(US)
Canada : $47,000(CND)

Factoring in how our dollar has risen since 2003 about 38%, also cars are generally cheaper in the US, does this difference seem unusual to anyone else? I was wondering if people in here have purchased their Z new or used? I just think its odd that for the price of a used 350z in toronto you can get a new 2006 in the US.

Thumbs down Same here...

I bought my '06 Silverstone back Aug/05. I am in the GTA and it arrived in 11/05. My final tag price was $ 56thousand Canadian. I actually went to University with the dealerships owner's son so...they were able to knock even more off that. It just sounds so much more expensive here no matter how you cut it.

Anyone else with more information? I believe this concern is amplified when looking at the re-sale market.

$27K US thats for a base model, there is no such thing over here. Compare the specs that come on a standard Canadian Z with a US model. Touring @$32,450 is the closest, then you have to pay for side airbags ($620) and some other things. Off the top of my head there is probably still a 10K difference in price... thats the joy of living in this free country.

Well being that I still have 2 years of university left, looks like I can only afford a used model. Anyone know if it is affordable to purchase one in the US and bring it over here? I have no clue what kind of tariff's you would have to pay, most likely not worth it, still curious though. The G35 looks like a good alternative, but not what I have my heart set on . The 350Z is extremely rare in Toronto, I barely see one once a week; with a sticker price like that, I now understand why .

Z's a not as rare as you think I see at least one (that's not mine) on a daily basis.

I see one Zed every week while I see 1 porsche a day. IMO, that is definition of rare.

Rare doesn't mean exotic, it just means there are less Zeds out there then other cars, has nothing to do with money. Look how rare the chevette is now ;P

Two years ago, I used to see 1 Zed every 2 weeks.

Lightbulb Well...

It obviously depends on where you are in the city. I commute to work from Unionville to North York. I consistently z 1-3Zs (usually on the way home. probably Noodleman's LOL).

Unfortunately, income does play a role. Finish University...start your career and work hard for at least a year...at that point, you will probably be burning with desire. You can apply a healthy down payment and loan the rest out or...perhaps take a different route.

If used is the only option that works well, it can be done. However, patience is a virtue. I was much in the same situation as you. In my second year of University (2002) I wanted the Z. Finished the degree, started my career and here we are. When you start talking in terms of months 12, 16, 20...it is much more of a reality then you think.

Make it happen.

Ps. I see many Porsches as well. In my heart of hearts, I honestly believe the Z is as good as a 911. Don't throw stats at me. Don't throw performance at me. I've driven both. The bottom line is there is absolutely no matching bang against buck when it comes to the Z. FYI, I've caught guys in Porsches staring at me making a turn. Now that is something to behold.

Z on!

right on mike. I only made the observation about it being not as rare in the GTA area, not about anything else. Just today i saw 3 z's going southbound on the DVP while i was parked attempted to move northbound.

I see PLENTY of porsches in the Downtown core CONSTANTLY. Caymans being the rarer one (though there's one at the lot i park at ), i honestly see way more 911's around than anything else...it's like some dealership was giving them away or something!

I find putting some exterior mods to your car really helps you stand out from all the stock Zeds out there.

For looks, I tinted the Zed, put on a JDM CF lip(painted), put on a short antenna, took off the rear wiper, put on some after market rims, and lowered the car.

Also having an aftermarket exhaust is also nice to sound different

Im sure as many pp know, when you get to your 4th year of uni ( im starting my 4th this fall and 1 more year after that), you're so sick of it all and cant wait to finish. I mean, your paying for pp to make your life miserable, not only that, your working your *** off with no tangible rewards.

I live at home, and with only one real expense (school), i figure i can delve into a little debt since iv got my school pretty much paid off.

secondly...Ni...a little debt never hurt anyone...it's just a little and it's just a car...once you start a career...it will seem like nothing...seriously.

I think this thread has gotten a little side tracked. "Ni's" original question is it cheaper to import from the US. Well here is the math...

A new 06Z coupe is approx $53,000 CDN$ OTD.

MSRP 06Z coupe enthus - $30,500 USD.
US Tax @ 6% - $32,330 USD.
US-CND Conversion @ 11% - $35,886 USD
Duty 6.1% & Tax 14% - $43,099 CND$

On top of that, there is no warrenty. I'm not sure how much a warrenty is if you buy it off a dealership. But add that on too. Also add on about $2,000 to make the car to CDN safety standards.

Personally, I think it could be cheaper because I don't believe a warrenty and safety will cost $10,000 CDN.

There also might be some other costs that I'm not aware of.

There is no way a 06 coupe cost $53K. You are talking about the roadster being $53K.

The 06 coupe start at $46KCDN. Here is the link to the starting prices: http://nissan.ca/en/vehicles/350Z/index.html

PS: I have no idea what OTD stands for ;(

OTD = out the door. Final price with taxes and everything in.

MSRP = $46,198 + $1,294 freight + 14% sales tax = $54,140.

It's actually more, $100 AC tax, $75 Gas Tax, $186 admin fee, $198 program registration, then add another 14% tax onto all that. Works out to be $54,778.14 at MSRP on the road price. That's the cheapest coupe model you can buy in Canada and does NOT include Brembo brakes and Rays wheels.
