Temporary plate for importing a car
I ask because my buddy just ended up buying an is250 from Boston area, but his insurance company wouldn’t give him a temporary license plate for the states, only valid in Ontario, well when importing a car that doesn’t really help much.
Even though he’s having the car shipped to the Buffalo border, he still cant go and drive it in, so he’s forced to get a truck and trailer, and trailer the car over the border.
My plan was to make a trip from my purchase, buy the Z and spend a few days in the states while slowly driving it back home. But it looks like that plan might be going down the drain if I cannot get a temporary plate.
How have you guys done this? besides having to use a broker...

I got a 30 day temporary plate from the dealer i bought my Z from in PA.
Then drove from Pensylvnia, to the Lewiston bridge in Buffalo. It was suppose to be $50 or so but i got them to throw it in for free.
I actually still have it on the car lol.

Yeah the dealer would be the clear choice, which Im hoping will work for myself, however, my buddy said in the state of Massachusetts they dont permit temporary plates, talk about horse $hit.
But guess it depends on the state, so hopefully when I find my Z it will be in the right state.

So I guess unless they specifically ask you, you should be fine.

They only asked me for my VIN number when I requested coverage, they didn't ask for the location nor origin of the car.
So I drove the car across the border with an american temp plate, and then went to the MTO to get an Ontario temp plate when my American one expired.
By which time, I had the paperwork to go to crappy tire to get my inspection done and get it titled in Ontario.

So it seems to be a Massachusetts policy only, whatever their problem is, they dont hang out temp plates... My buddy is gonna see if he car get one from NY, so when they drop the car off in Buffalo he can put the temp plates on there and drive the car over the border and home... after he can get his perminant registration and plate.
