Hey Guys,

I just recently got a set of wheels for my Z. I am having a hard time trying to find something that will clean/polish them. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I've tried some off the shelf sprays but they seem to leave a dull finish and or leave streaks..ARG!!!

Do not use abrasive cleaners, especially if you have a clear coat on your polished lip.

I would suggest using car soap.

 

i use this rim cleaner for my STOCK RAYS rims, it's the only cleaner i found @ cdn. tire that actually takes crap out w/o scrubbing:

it says it's clear-coat safe, but i have no experience using it with aftermarket rims.

 

oh my god! Don't use rim cleaner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!

Go to Canadian tire and buy;
1) A soft wool mitt dedicated just to wheel cleaning, replace as necessary.
( don't cheap out. Buy a real wool mitt with long fibres that trap brake dust away from the cleaning surface. If you cheap out in 6 monts you'll have POS wheels)
2) Some terry cloths
3) An electric leaf blower
4) Meguiars soft gel car wash or equivalent.
5) Order some "Wheel Wax" online from somewhere. Google is your friend.

Step by step.

- take wheels off car.
- hose them down with soft jet thouroughly
- wet mitt
- fill bucket with car soap and water. Car soap is important because the detergent won't strip wax or etch your clear coat.
- rinsing wheel and mitt often with copious water wash wheel inside and out
- wash out of the sun, don't allow water beads to dry on wheels
- once clean prop rims up and dry them off with leaf blower
- dry off any residual water with a clean terry cloth in a blotting motion
- apply wheel wax very sparingly to cool dry rims
- allow to dry to haze
- buff off with clean terry cloths

This is a major PITA! I did this last night. If you have nice wheels it's worth it.

I used whell cleaner on a small part of the lip. Followed the instructions, but was not satisfied with the outcome.

I never thought about the leaf blower. I wonder what the neighbors will think?

Don't get me wrong, I love my rims, but I can't see myself taking off the wheels everytime I wash my car. I need something that can be used everytime I wash my car.

 

You forgot some steps:

1) Take tires off car
2) Hang them from the ceiling
3) Use a toothbrush to clean every groove in the tread
4) Clean the inside of your tires, you dont want it dirty in there
5) Use your tongue to lick the rim of the tire, this will make it easier to get the tire back on.

 

I wonder if there is that much an need out there for this to be a business case. Hmmm

 

I don't take them off everytime either. Only when I want to wax the inner lip, otherwise do all the steps I've mentioned. Seeing as you've already having some issues with fogging you will want to take them off at least once and give them a good coat of wheel wax or two. And once they are waxed, they are way easier to keep clean. The brake dust no longer sticks.

 

srsly guise, it's not that hard... the other thing... wash wheels first, then car second top to bottom.

The theory being that washing wheels should take as long as washing the rest of the car. During that time you don't want water beads to dry anywhere on your paint, and the mist of washing the rest of the car is sufficient to keep your wheels from getting spotted.
