Question Do You Care About The Olympics?

Ok listen...I am tired. I have done no research. I just got in from the office and I am eating various foods would you would consider snacks for dinner BUT I am not as tired as I am with this goose egg garbage.

WTF is up Canada? Seriously…nothing yet? What is this like Day five of what should be nothing more than a weekend event at most?

Ok, I am not an Olympic expert. I can't for the life of me figure out what there is underhand baseball there and there wasn't enough money to back golf into the schedule.

I try to show interest in it...it seems like the right thing to do but this doesn't help. Really too tired to formulate any other points.

Side notes:

- I heard $43 billion for the event over there. Yikes. Money spent well? Money spent elsewhere more sound? It makes the NASA budget look down right undersized considering the goal of each.

- Would you care more if it was the winter games? Will 2010 generate more interest or at the very least, more medals?

- Off topic but still related to sports (Man-Ram is getting crazier by the day, Farve is in for world of hurt, Sundin needs to pick up the pace and Harrington is the new Woods).

There, that should stir up some controversy. My work here is done.

Discuss Now. Where the hell are the responses. Now, now now!

Don't know who is competing and don't care. It's gone past national competition and into a political and PR orgy...

It's about as dumb as watching pro sports.

seriously though, the olympics are supposed to be free of political meaning but of course, they always are. take the legendary US/USSR hockey match in the 1980 games for example. it was simply metaphorical for the battle between the two nations. in today's games, it is a similar battle between china and the US. if you don't get chills when michael phelps stands on the podium to the US national anthem and has gold draped around his neck IN A COMMUNIST country, then you're missing the point. it is simply moving...just my 2 cents there. that being said, the olympic motto is stonger, higher, faster. and as wise people have said before, that motto doesn't mean stronger, higher, faster than anyone else, just simply stronger, higher, and faster....it is a test of human will and human endurance. the effort that all of these athletes put forth is beyond me. i enjoy watching the games if nothing else than to see that in the simplest form, humans are still capable of amazing feats, and that in essence is what the olympics are all about. we should watch these games and see that we are all able to do more...

**** the Olympics. Some stupid games shouldn't bankrupt a country. I don't know how many billions it will end up costing Vancouver, but we will NEVER recoup the losses, and all our minor league sports are dead because they now can't afford to rent the new mega stadiums that are in place over the cheaper ones beforehand. What a stupid **** wagging contest for politicians this is.

don't blame the games for the minor league teams not being able to afford the nice new stadiums. that is the consumers' fault. if consumers would realize the value and fun of seeing minor league sports then everyone would benefit. and you can't blame the games for the amounts of money cities spend to have the most extravagant spectacle the world has seen yet either. the games will carry on, regardless of what cities and politicians spend to bring them and sponsor them. blame your politicians and blame the consumers.

ya, you don't think I blame the politicians? but it is the fault of the games to become such a monster, city destroying spectacle. greedy people who EXPECT 1,000 dollar plates at dinner and to be treated like royalty, plus numerous gifts are going to destroy what should be a great occasion. And the whole point of "minor" and kids leagues are to give non-professionals a chance to play, and spectators cheap seats. Why pay the same price for seats at a non professional game, when you could watch a professional game?

I think the Olympics are amazing. I don't pay attention to all the extraneous crap that seems to distract so many. I just like watching athletes who have dedicated their lives to their sport do their best in the biggest competition in the world.

PS Summer Olympics > Winter Olympics despite Canada's natural penchant for the Winter Games.

My fav sport is Athletics. Best pure athletes in the world.

there is a minor league baseball team near me that is cheap to see, but i would pay professional baseball prices to see simply because it is plain to see that it is pure baseball and pure sport. the athletes there play more for love of the game there than in the big leagues. it is just so much more fun.

though the olympics are on a whole different level, the essence is still there. i was there in 96 when michael johnson won gold in atlanta, and there was a similar feel to minor league baseball. sure, there was glitz and glamor, and johnson threw his gold shoes into the crowd, but you could see the hopeful runners who had jobs on the side, and you could see their love for the sport, not just a payday in their eyes. that is what makes the olympics special. if you haven't read about steve prefontaine's fight against the amateur athletic union in the late 60's/early 70's, that will give perspective. he was possibly the best middle distance runner of all time, and knew what it meant to be treated as an "amateur".

Why would it be any different from any other olympics?..
I guess I am missing your point because I fail to see the huge impact of winning the gold medal in a communist country as opposed to any other...

^Another example of political agendas beating out everything else. IMO, opening ceremony ftw, the rest of the olympics ftl.
