Food Distribution
I have been working in the food industry as an Accounts recievable basic clerical staff making connections at Toronto's fancy Italian restaurants. My uncle owns a seperate food distribution company that delivers accross Toronto. Now, given i have no debt am 24 and a recent University graduate, i figure its time for me to start my own company. Would it be wise for me tohave my own start-up, I have access to a small van and my 350z is not going to be used for delivery. I have connections with my uncle who will allow me to buy products at cost and I am able to throw his name around due to many large companies need credit and cant pay all vendors each day. Does anyone think this is a good leap. I have good product knowledge, and a few contacts , but i can slowly make more connections. I know i will be walking the streets most of the days, downtown. Is this a good leap, or am i to young and do I not have enough expeirence.
I figure, instead of me busting my *** for 20 an hour and going back to school to study to be a cga, i feel i enjoy the food industry, I want to make it my home. I have few connections, and I have always dreamed of this as an ideal job. THere is tons of potential and tons of money to be made.
Stay where you are for another 1-2 years and start talking to current and potential customers more often. Ask them what they wish was offered but currently isn't. Find out what the industry is missing. Start to do small stuff on the side, do favours, help people out - use your uncles business as a means to get people stuff in a pinch when they can't get it anywhere else.
Build up trust, all while you still have a good paying 9-5. If at that point you think you can make it happen, start selling out of your house and just be a middle man until you can afford a location

^sound advice.
You should really try and complete your education while you are working.... Its always great to have a security blanket, in your case, a CGA degree/title.
Being your own boss is alot of work, are you prepared to give up your social life? Something to ask yourself...
Best of luck nicK!

Running your own business can be quite profitable if you are successful. However a CGA designation would open a lot of doors and pretty well guarantee success for you in the long run in accounting or audit both which are becoming huge industries in our post Sarbanes-Oxley world. Audit at large companies starts around 60k a year and goes well into the 100k a year mark with only a few years experience if you have the right touch.
Good luck in whatever you choose.

Well, given that i have found a niche. Lots of places dont mind paying a premium price but for great service. Given our tough times, and our recession yet to hit, i feel that my job is being weeded out. Just today, they brought someone else in the office to take over my job. They found a girl with more experience and who will work for 13 an hour to take my job. Great. Now, im not about to be moved, i gave my 2 weeks and hopefully i can make it work soon. I took most of their client list and am gonna hang on to it and solicit them after a few months to avoid legal issues. But, i think the time has come. PLus, i will continue to do my cga courses. One a semester. And prolly give up the social life. SO, thanks for the advice. I wish i could have stayed in the company to learn more, but what can i say, they were going to fire me anyways. Thanks to all who replied.
