Default Race Report - Nov 6th @ Toronto Motorsports Park

Hey all,

I thought I'd throw down some brief impressions of my track day at Cayuga for those of you interested in such things. Read on:

My tracking experience up to this point consisted of but a single day at Mosport about 6 weeks ago. That one taste of speed, the adrenaline, the g-forces, however, was enough to have me wanting much more.

That one day at Mosport - the fastest track in North America - was enough to bring my stock calipers to their knees. I had babied the brakes all day knowing that they were the weak link in my vehicles performance and, even with the additional care, they had given up the ghost by the fifth session of the day. So my visit to Toronto Motorsports Park was to be my first test of a real high performance brake package in addition to my first time on a much tighter, twistier track.

It was with a mix of excitement and a little anxiety that I arrived at the ill-named TMP. (This is nowhere near Toronto!) Demonstrating our passion for all things fast, the first two arrivals were myself followed by Wu-Watt. The 350Z clearly attracts a committed enthusiast.

After a final tire pressure check and increasing my compression/rebound settings, it was time to put the rubber to the road. What a different experience than Mosport! To start with, there are essentially no marshals and no "formality" at all. Sessions are not organized or controlled at all - you simply enter the track at will and drive as many laps as you wish. It was a relaxed and super friendly atmosphere and I met a bunch of great car nuts.

The roster for the day included: Ferrari F430 Scuderia (wow!), Nissan GT-R, BMW M5, BMW M3, BMW 335i, Audi TT (380hp! with R-compund tires), Corvette Z06 x 2, WRX Sti x 2, Honda S2000, Porsche Boxster, and a couple of others that I am probably forgetting. A nice bunch of cars to say the least.

Admittedly, my goal on the day was to beat the 1:24.?? laid down by fellow my350z.com forum member, 2TH PWR. Nothing like a little competition to get the blood flowing!

That said...this is one challenging track. With a bunch of tight chicanes through the mid-section of the course there was a massive amount of time to be won (or lost) through careful line selection and brake/throttle points.

Best times:
1st session - 1:27.859, 1:28.833, 1:29.585
4th session - 1:25.620, 1:26.200, 1:26.313
6th session - 1:23.970, 1:24.756, 1:25.052

Check out the gradual progression. Every time out I was able to pull just a little more time out of the clock. I also experienced my first high speed spin. Coming out of corner 1, I was a little distracted and got on the throttle too aggressively. The rear wheels starting sliding out and I was barrelling down the straight - sideways - when the rears found some traction and shot my into the rhubarb. I would have been hilarious to have seen from behind me. No damage, no issues...just a slightly humbled driver returning to the pits with flushed cheeks and a cockpit full of grass.

For my bragging rights, I killed the most expensive car on the track by passing the Ferrari F430 Scuderia. My little Nissan smoking a $300k Ferrari... Ahhh, the satisfaction.

The new brakes were great. Much better modulation, more better pedal feel and they took a LOT more abuse before becoming heat soaked. Brake ducting will be a winter mod to further improve performance.

I've got some Go Pro footage as well that I'll post up (hopefully tomorrow). The sound quality sucks, but the video is good. Unfortunately I wasn't recording at the time of my off-road adventure. That would have been the most entertaining footage of all!

I need some video tips from 2TH PWR who is producing the most entertaining track videos EVER. Love the little captions and the sound is great!

Look forward to next season and getting a chance to meet and race more of you guys! And thanks Wu-Watt for a fun day - it was nice to have another forum guy there to hang and drive with.

I saw him wipe out in the rear view!!^^ Very entertaining! Happy nothing broke on ya.
I couldnt hang with that Ferrari, as it shows in the footage. It kinda makes you try too hard, then you end up going slower...
Great day Miles, right? Nice TT's too btw and 6/4 bbk!! You are a total sleeper with those stock wheels on.
Cant wait till next season!

That's some serious improvement in lap times over the course of the day. Do you mind sharing what kind of mods you have on the car?

Video posted! Used Sony Vegas as Windows Live Movie Maker kept crashing while trying to prepare the file. Nothing fancy...just the hot lap.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9DaRF1bKgc

I got lucky on traffic - it was a quiet day at the track. And there is still so much time to be carved off of that lap it's not funny. Looking at all the data I have I can see lots of opportunity to get faster.

And there was no way I can yet manage rev-matching under the pressure of a hot lap at this point. Driving at 8/10ths...sure. All out? Nope, not me. But I'll get it with more practice.

I'll also post up a video when I tailed Wu-Watt for a couple laps. Looks cools to see another Z cruise the circuit.

There's also another vid with the camera mounted onto Wu's car. SMOOTH as butter that man is...

Not much:

ENGINE MODIFICATIONS:

HANDLING MODIFICATIONS:
- Volk GT-C Gunmetal/Chrome 2-pc forged wheels; Rear: 9.5” x 19, Front: 8.5” x 19
- Toyo Proxes T1-R tires; Rear: 285/35, Front: 245/35
- APS: Modified performance front strut brace
- Bilstein PSS10 adjustable coilovers
- SPL machined aluminum adjustable front a-arms

- Nismo “Racing” Turbo Flow Air Enhancer front lip

BRAKES:
- MovIt machined billet aluminum calipers, 6/4 piston
- MovIt 342mm 2-piece vented/drilled rotors

My current track tire setup consists of the stock 2003 18s with Falken Azenis RT615. Not a bad tire...but they are ancient. Something fresher would be an eye opener, I'm sure. An eye peeler even.

The car is also hosting a big, custom audio system. I'm sure it adds 150+ pounds but I'd hate to give up the luxury of beautiful sound at this point. Plus, I want to do the rear wiper delete. That'll surely even out the weight gain of the system.

I love my car!

Performance wise....
I have HKS exhaust, 5/16th plenum spacer, osiris tune = 260 rwhp
stock suspension with Eibach prokit springs, Enkei RPF1 with Hankook RS3 street tires.
Stock non-brembo brakes. Passenger seat, spare, and tools removed.
Best last time was 1:24.72, I also had a 1:24.90. I had 2 sessions before my brakes were cooked though.

That's quite an extensive list, lol. Did you find that the RT-615's got really greasy once they got hot? I noticed that when I had them on my previous car, during track days...

Next summer hopefully we get a chance to all head to the track together, it should be good!

Yah, it was one of the best DE's that APH had ever tuned to that point.

Yeah the tires are definitely not the strong point in my cars performance. However, while they may have somewhat low absolute traction limits, they still over enough grip that you can rotate the car effectively with trail braking mid-corner. And the braking traction is quite good. I find that mid-corner, holding-a-line traction is where they suffer most.

Plus, my set is probably eight years old - their productive years are long past. Rubber deteriorates massively with age alone regardless of mileage.

Yeah? well this guy looks like he was there too, and he SMASHED the track record.
1:09s boooooyeeeeee. Bye bye sasha.

funny thing is the lady at the beginning is nodding very fast as well, and his arm movements at the end seem strangely fast, and everyone is flying through the pits! I guess it was just a fast day at the track?

That thing must have quad turbos and 895hp. The kit was from Ebay, too. Tuned by his brother with an iPhone.

Damn I've got to get faster. Hehe
