short shifters, for better or worse?
as far as drag racing goes
I've read some people say they like the shorter shifts when racing, while some claim it's harder to get into gears, especially at high rpms. Obviously the short shifter would be great on a road course, but is it a good thing for drag racing when you need to shift really quickly?

Yes short shifters go into gear faster and more precise than stock at any rpm.
Warning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dont install yourself unless you have switched shifters before or something similar often

Too many members installs went wrong. It really screws up other members trying to make a decision on a shifter and everyone posts these lousy reviews on all the shifters.
Its great you all had good luck doing your own install; thats why I noted if you know what your doing for sure go for it. Otherwise leave it to a proffessional if your not sure.
I can tell you for a fact most members could care less about experiencing mod installations. They just want the best products that work correctly and would like it if someone else did the work that knew what they were doing.
Especially when it only costs 60 or 70 dollars for the install. Not worth taking the chance and alot of stress and aggravation in my book.
Look I admit I am not an expert when it comes to shifter installs. Ill bet anything I could have installed the shifter myself and it would have turned out just fine. And I have installed other shifters with no problems.
If you own a Z you surely can afford 60 or 70 dollars to let someone else do the work while you read a magazine.
Im not just making this up; read all the crapy threads bad mouthing just about every short shifter on the market. So hows someone not experienced in mods supposed to make a good decision on ie short shifters with so many mixed reviews.
All Im saying is if most of the people that did installs themselves had good luck instead of bad I wouldnt have made that comment.

ao are you saying that the shifters that rattle, and vibrate excessively are because of a bad install?
i want to get one... as soon as i find one that won't rattle or vibrate like crazy, even at high rpms

All I can tell you is mine does not rattle or vibrate. I used a driveline race shop who has installed hundreds of short shifters.
Instead of doing it myself and I am quite able believe me. But since all the mixed reviews and I was having the race shop install the 3.9 anyway I figured I will let the shop install the shifter and see if it works without rattling or vibrating like 50% of the reviews stated it would.
My shifter works better than stock and no noise or vibration. My thoughts were correct. The B&M works perfect and I didnt do the install. My pride is shot but I have a great shifter. I would rather have a great shifter with no noise.

I was trying to get a C's shifter direct from Japan but it became a pain in the ***. They wouldnt return one single e-mail, so I figured they really didnt want to sell to the U.S.
The rogue only reduced 20 % throw; not enough for winning a race.
The Nismo/Mossy is adjustable and has a 40 % throw reduction; a bit too much, and I am the only one who drives my car so no need for adjustment anyway.
Evo shifter.... I still havent heard any reviews so it is definetely out for now; and besides I didnt want to wait any longer.
Trust me the B&M is the next best thing since the C's is not availble and even if it was they dont answer e-mails so if you had any problems you would be on your own. And besides I heard the C's leans to the right in neutral.
Well there you go. The B&M is the only way to go but must have a perfect install if you expect it to work perfect.

The install of the shifter is easy. The problems I've read have certainly not been from install. The rattle comes from the factory shif ****. It has a bushing in it tha needs to be compressed. The factory shifter is tapered, so when you screw down the **** the busing is pushed up.
Poizon,
Yours doesn't rattle because you bough a different ****,as did I.
The filing is required so the bottom of the shifter can move far enough to shift into reverse.
I personally wouldn't buy the B&M if your going to buy a short shifter. I have a problem with the little square piece, the piece that hits the guide plate. It is wearing away and making the shift into 5th gear more and more difficult.

It shouldnt cause problems. you can put your stock back on any time the filing doesnt do anything to keep you from going back.
Question: When your Z's are cold at what rpm do you shift into 3rd. It shifts perfect after 5 minutes of driving. But when its cold even when I had the stock shifter on if I dont take the rpms to 4000 or 5000 rpms it doesnt like 3rd cold at lower rpms.
Or do you shift from 2nd to 3rd as fast as you can when cold ?

I think I'm one of the lucky ones with a good 1st generation tranny, build date 10/02.
Just tried something different. when cold if I shift around 2000 rpms no problem works perfect for the first 5 minutes. Once the car warms up I can shift at any rpm no problem.
So anyone else with a touchy 3rd gear when cold; try not going over 2000 rpms or so when shifting. Im sure most of you figured it out already.
Im used to taking the rpms to 4000 t0 5000 rpms cold or not. The Z doesnt like that when cold.
