Question Best affordable OBD2 scanner/fault code reader?

I did hear about a certain "Consult II" software but that is about it, I am not even sure that software is offered to public or not.

I am coming from the VW world and I had my VagCom software and plug that worked exteremely well, I was able to read fault codes, reset them and do bunch of other simple tricks for $199. Is there such a software for the Z? Or is everyone just using the off the shelf OBD2 scanner software that you can pretty much buy anywhere ? (I even saw something similar at Autozone the other day!!!!)

Sorry about such a newbie question although I am far from being one, it's just that I have yet to see anyone discussing this thouroughly on the forums.. oh yeah, I AM a forum wh*re!!

I am running PocketLogger OBDII with a palm M125 that I bought off ebay for $40. It allows code scan and reset, dataloging and more. For $165 it works great.

That's cool, my friend uses this on his Subaru as well and he's very pleased with it.

Anyone else using a laptop based scan tool? I had seen something Vivid racing had for sale some time ago.. is anybody using that or heard of it at all?

Looking for the same here...

Pocketlogger looks like a great bargain if it works with the Z. I'm looking particularly for logging timing and catching knocks... does our port output that info?

Also, does the digimoto unit or others offer any additional benefits besides laptop and pda compatibility?

Check out the digimoto site they have demos, but you can do a few things with it:
Check codes and clear them
1/4 mile measurement
dyno measurement
Real time display of two parameters in graph style
Real time display of various parameters in table format
Data Logging

Same here. Previously had an Audi. I sitll offer the use of my VagCom app to local VW/Audi folks. I doubt there is an app for other cars that is quite up to what VagCom can accomplish on VAG cars. Many of the German auto shops I know of use even use VagCom instead of the factory scan tools.

I did a fair bit of research on this a while back, and found a ton of scantool apps. I have a list at home. I'll try and post it up when I get there.

Here are the scanners I've found so far. Some are traditional scantool emulators, some are just little mini monitoring tools.

GREAT info... thanks a lot people!

Yes, I did realize now how good the vagcom is for VAG cars... it is a neat little toy.

Oh well, all I wanted for the Z is just to read codes and clear them if needed and all of these do that and more so.. thanks again for the info.

Digimoto it is then.. at least for me. I'd rather get something tried and that works. Plus the price is right.. I'm sure they all pretty much do the same thing anyway, I just wanted to make sure it worked on a laptop. Thanks for the help.

Yeah, I'm sure they all work. It just comes down to the interface, and all the extra bells and whistles. I doubt we'll find something as good as VagCom (since it was specialized for VAG cars), but some of those generic OBD products look pretty darned good.

Is there a USB version of Digimoto? The only ones that I see in the website are serial port.

Sounds really nice feature-wise... but they don't seem to have screenshots on their web page.
