Default Trouble with Crawford..

I am a fan of Crawford.. Well I was.. I put the high flow cats on about 10 months ago.. Then a couple months later I put on the Nismo exhaust.. Wow it sounded great. Then about 3 months ago I noticed a wierd sound. Like an air leak. So I brought it to my mech and when we put it up on a lift we noticed a nice crack in the crawford cat right on the bend. So I call Crawford they were realy nice and sent me a new set.. So I put them both on and now for the last 3 weeks my cars has been running bad and I notice some extra noise. Im bring it back to my guy on Sat. I think its the cats again.. Is there an issue with these cats? Im not sure what to do as im not going to keep paying this guy to replace my cats after they crack every month or so. It made me soo sick I dont even want to drive it till its fix. So for the last 3 weeks I drove my car 2 times.. Please help! Is there any other cats that dont have this problem with the Nismo? Or maybe I should just go test pipes...

learn to install them yourself, that will save you money, and t hat way you would know if they are done correctly.

as for crawford? all i have heard is good things.

Haven't had any problems here with the Crawford headers & cats with the Nismo exhaust. I've seen metal crack at bends & welds crack on the Nismo exhaust, so it's bound to happen sometimes to any product - I understand the hassle, though, and feel for ya!

The "extra" noise you hear.....what does it sound like? A rattle like metal on metal at certain RPM's? If so, check on the passenger side cat up near the body/frame at the top of the cat. When we installed the cats on my Z with the Nismo exhaust, the exhaust connection on passenger side was pushing the cat up & it was vibrating on the lower inner engine bay at the top of the cat pipe. By pulling down on the cat & exhause pipe while tightening the hold-down bolt on the cat we were able to pull it down enough to stop to vibrating. Don't know if this happens on all Nismo exhausts, but something to check for.

Also, I know you mentioned that there was a crack in the cat, but did you check to see if the inner cat material was intact? If it had broken apart, some of the honeycomb material could have gotten into the exhaust pipe & blocked the exhaust flow - would cause the car to run bad and the pieces to rattle in the exhaust - I've seen that happen as well.

Don't know if any of this info will help, but just trying..........

I had the same issue with one of my two Crawford HiFlow Cats. It's really not that big of a deal. You can keep bugging Doug and the crew at Crawford Z Car, but the easiest thing is to take it to your local muffler shop and have them seal the crack.

I think it cost me $20 and I have not had a problem since.

I also think Crawford has worked on correcting this issue. It was more prevalent with the earlier HiFlow cats. Supposed to be redesigned now.

I wish you luck, however based on what you have stated it seems as though Crawford has been very generous and professional. Not many companies will provide new units just like that. Kudos to the crawford crew

Are you sure the exhaust is hung right. You say they have been on for 10 months, then they break and the new set is already broken. I suspect the exhaust install.

Exhaust systems have to hang on the car, if there is tension, it will cause the weakest link to crack and break and it will continue to do so until the tension is fixed.

Things to look for, do all the joints line up correctly without being pulled or pushed (other than what is simply needed to support it). If you take off the hangers and support the system from underneath, is it still lined up at the back or off kilter.

The Crawford CATs are cracking with Nismo Y-pipes. They know about the issue and re-enforced the Y-Pipe side weld of the CAT to pipe. I had mine crack and then totally split on the drivers side while waiting for a new one. The car is damn loud with no muffler on just 3 cylinders
It seemed like the CAT wasn't long enough since after splitting the gap was about 1/2" but still relatively lined up.

Don’t put test pipes on the car with a Nismo Exhaust unless you want the most ungodly loud Z around. We installed a set of test pipes on my Z and a customers Z. mine with the Vibrant Exhaust and his with the Nismo. The Nismo and Test pipe setup is just way too loud.

Another brand of High flow Cats will be on the market in a matter of weeks be patient

How does the Nismo/Crawford setup sound? I am thinking about buying the Nismo catback and I live right down the street from crawford so I was thinking about putting them on too. I dont want it to loud, but I want it to sound powerful. Does it have this issue with the JIC y-pipe?

Hmm. I was going to go for the Crawford Hi-flow cats and the Nismo catback exhaust. Good to hear that Crawford is fixing it. I guess I'll hold off on the hi-flow cats until then & go ahead and buy the Nismo Exhaust kit first.

Amazing, I had the same problem with my Crawford Cats too. I also have the Nismo exhaust. Mine cracked and Doug sent me a new pair with instructions for my installer. For some reason their Cats are a tighter fit on the G. Doug said once you have the Cats installed, heat the pipe on the bend to release the tension. I had my installer do this and I haven't had a problem with my new replaced Cats since.

To confirm this, call Doug. Good luck and hope this helped.
