Default B&M Shifter problem, HELP

Hi,

I got my shifter installed and everything. It can go into reverse and into all gears correct. The only problem is, I don't need to push down to get into reverse. I tried tightening the bolts to the guide plate down really hard, but it just doens;t work.

HELPPPPPPPPPP... this really sucks.. I dun shift into sixth now because I dun want to go into reverse or screw up my syncro....

also, did you install the shifter with the tab on the wrong side? make sure the tab is on the right side, it is what forces you to push down to get into reverse

Hey, thanks for the replies.

I have the spring under the cup. I have the blue (provided by B&M) plate underneath the stock plate. The reverse pin is pointed to the passanger side. Umm.. there a slight "bump" on the guide plate, and the reverse pin just keep on sliding underneath it. No matter how much I tighten those bolts up, the pin never its the gate. I am kinda FUSTRATED.. and pissed off....

but, thanks for the help. Anymore suggestions?

You may have the earlier model, which has the smaller reverse pin. The second revision has a bigger pin which I think solved that problem. There are pics floating around somewhere on here that shows the difference, and if you do have the older one call B&M and they should do a replacement for you.

I called b&M cause i have an early version that rattles incessantly and never heard from them. maybe it is time to try again.

I have the B&M and it's EXTREMELY hard to get into 1st gear until the tranny warms up. I have to give it several good tries to get it into gear. Anyone else have this issue?

Nope, mine is very smooth...no complaints other than some vibrations under WOT which I'm working on a solution for...

Did you follow the step about filing down the casing? You may have either not filed enough or filed too much. Personally i wish i never installed my short shifter because its not smooth at all and when i pop out of reverse to go towards first i grind into 5th on a regular basis, even when being EXTREMELY CAREFUL.

Thanks fellas.

This locking me out of 1st gear thing is annoying. I have to drive around my neighborhood in the morning for a bit to let the tranny warm up until I can get into regular traffic. 3rd gear is also really notchy.

If you have to drive around so the tranny can warm, that does not sound like a problem with the shifter. Have you tried going back to the stock shifter recently? It might be worth it to make sure your problems aren't with the tranny itself...

I find it difficult to get into 1st gear for the first 5-10 minutes driving as long as the car is rolling. If I am stopped, I have no problems engaging 1st.

Is your car rolling when you attempt to engage 1st gear?

Same here. For example, I'll hit a corner to slow down and make a right turn while rolling a bit. I try and get it into 1st and it doesn't go in for the first several tries. At a complete stop, it takes much less effort to get into 1st.

I think it is the B&M. I didn't have any problems with my stock shifter (shifted like butter). Also changed my tranny and differential fluids to fully synthetic, but I doubt that it would cause this level of notchiness and difficulty shifting into 1st.

I think that the issue with forcing the gear shifter into first can damage the syncros. I know that all the cars that I have driven did not allow the driver to shift into first while rolling.

Anybody have any thoughts about how force-shifting into first affects our trannys?

Hmm, I have the second revision and it's very smooth going into all gears, but then again I don't think I often shift into 1st when moving very fast, and when I do I just gently ease it in as that can be a pretty touchy downshift in general.
