Default VQ35DE vs RB26DETT.

Hello!

I'm going to put a RB26DETT or an VQ35DE in my 200sx s13(240sx with turbo I think). I'm wondering which engine will be best for me?

I'm going for about 1000bhp+ and the car will be driven on the drag, drift, racetrack....

Money is not the issue her, which engine will hold for most hp?
Theoretical the VQ35DE most hold best because it is 0.9l bigger then RB26DETT and it is a new develop engine with new technology.
It will be singel turbo, Autronic SM4 controlsystem and so on...

How much do the VQ35DE hold for with stock bottom, just wondering?
How much do the RB25DET and VQ35DET gearboxs hold for?

What do you think?

I'm sorry for my bad English, I hope you will understand what I mean tho.

Anders,
I'd use the VQ35DE.

I'm not sure if you are going to make 1000+hp with a single turbo on the Z, one reason is due to lack of engine bay space.

Completely stock? ~450-500rwhp
You mean as long as you upgrade clutch, flywheel, rear half axles, etc.? No one knows. The Performance Motorsports Z is using an auto tranny.

I don't mean anything in a bad way, but it seems like you haven't done much research yet or you are just starting your research. I may be wrong.

But here's my 2 cents. If you are going to build a 1000-hp engine, its not only about the displacement. You need a RELIABLE engine that is able to take high boost. The RB26 has been proven time and time again that with built internals and bottom end, it can definitely do it, as it is stronger from the factory because of it was made specifically to handle boost, whereas the VQ35 was not. Of course, you can change to forged internals with a lower compression, and then re build the bottom end, but you would be taking a chance at it. There are drag 350Z's with over 1600hp produced from a VQ35, but how reliable is it? We don't really know for sure yet. If you are building this on your own, without sponsors, then I would suggest an RB26. It is much easier and the reliability has been proven to an extent, whereas the VQ is still under development in the aftermarket in regards to boost reliability. But of course, if you want to find out the reliability limit for a fully built VQ, and the money is not a factor at all, and you are a risk-taker, then go for it.

I don't consider myself a know-it-all, so of course I can be wrong, and you may know a lot more than I do. So feel free to correct me. I hope this helps in your planning process, and of course, all the luck to you.

Alex

I imagine if he is not going to use it on the street that reliability isn't much of an issue (other teams can get the engine to go down the drag strip for 8 seconds with stock crank, stock intake plenum, and only Darton sleeve liners).

I doubt you are going to have the room for the VQ.. The motor seems like its to wide for the bay but who knows. There are also countless RB into 240 swaps..more support for that swap. I would do that

Nah, I believe Monster Garage did a VQ35DE swap into a 240SX on one episode. I agree, i'm sure somebody makes a kit for that.

No it was an old Datsun...Yeah I do remember that. Maybe theres room after all. I just remember seeing the RB26 stuffed into a late model 240 and there was ZERO room in there............

I would always use the RB26DETT for that swap. You will spend less money to get the same HP or even more. The stock RB motor can hold 700 to 800 HP with no problems.

RB26 all the way.

VQ35DE VS RB26 is like Sport's car engine VS. Race car engine. Especially if you want to go over 1000hp. And remeber for Japanese Engine, size doesn't really matter. And regarding newer technology in VQ is for more efficient, and cleaner, but making power wise, and perfromance wise, RB all the way. When RB was designed, it's already way way ahead of it's time, so VQ is not really that much of advance, espeicially regarding using the engine for Race, I will said RB is still ahead of VQ. And think about it, how many time you hear VQ generate more than 1000 hp, and how many time you hear RB generated more than 1000hp.

VQ30DETT used in JGTC is different story, but the reason JGTC used VQ instead of RB on later JGTC used, is to accomodate JGTC's rules, and also, they want to test the new VQ. It's not cuz VQ is better engine.
