Default Anyone built up their own engine?

Anyone here done a build up themselves? I know the 240Z, 280Z guys will usually build up there own engines with forged internals and maybe send the head off for custom work. It can save a ton of cash. Do you guys think the VQ engine is way more complicated to build up? Maybe it can be done in a couple of stages, i.e. engine pull and replace pistons and connecting rods and send the heads to a pro shop.

I figure it would save thousands.

Yeah you are right....but you have to have the tools, equipment, and knowledge to do it right. I had my machinist do the machining and balancing...but everything else was all my own time and labour. It really makes a difference financially but be aware of what you are getting into with this motor...or any motor before you start.

IMO an SGP Racing shortblock or longblock is a good way to go.

Awesome! I have most of the tools from an older project but i'm sure i need more. My dad is a machinist but I don't think he'd be up for engine work. One day I hope to take the plunge and do the motor, but i'll probably go for an APS single turb kit first and then decide if a build is needed.
