Hey fellas. John from Smokeenup has added the Z to the available cars on his site. There are a ton of tools there for planning a monster. Have fun.

Default new gears

I understand your point, I don't know how my Z 5AT would accept a change from 3.36 to 3.73 or 4.11. would do to my 5AT with longevity added to the equation. I have a lot of toys and other interests than the Z. I know its blasphemy, but the Z is already carving a goodly chunk out of my budget and I would be loath to increase it by losing a transmission being over zealous with my AT.

Any insight on such an application on a 5AT?

It shouldn't present a problem unless your drag race a lot. Lower rear gears (numerically higher) actually produce less stress on the transmission. It's like starting your 10 speed bike in 1st gear instead of 3rd. It's easier to pedal and you accelerate more quickly.

Oh, I forgot to mention. With new rear gears you will also need an ECU Mod to adjust your speedometer. Otherwise, your speedo will be off. It used to be easy - just change your speedo gear (little plastic or metal gear). But now you must modify your computer to correct the speedo. So, the best time to do rear gears would be when you are ordering your new ECU mod. But of course neither the rear gears or the ECU mod are readily available YET...

I dont drive a Z, but this is THE GUY for building diffs. His name is Jim Blanton and he is condidered the best in the country by the BMW community(he's doing mine). Besides being very good, he's helpful. If he can't build it for you, he might be able to point you in the right direction.

My diff plans have taken a detour. I'm still swapping in a 6-spd, but have decided to wait on the gearing. In late Spring/early Summer, a PD twin-screw SC will be comming to market for ODB-II M3s. Since its positive displacement, it will make max boost from the get go and low-end TQ will be much higher. I'm hesitant to tweak the gearing until after this is installed...I still want to have a 1st gear.

I've been thinking about different gearing in the rear for a while now too. That would be a great mod, and I hope someone will come out with high quality gear sets. It would also be a good time to upgrade the LSD while the rear is out.

This should work to recalibrate your speedo's should you swap gears. Don't exactly know how the speedo works on the 350Z, but on the S2000 it works like a charm.

My other suggestion would be to get a better LSD if you are pulling apart the diff to swap out the rear gears anyways.

Someone, probably Nismo or Top Secret, will come out with rear gears at some point in the future, so don't worry too much about availability.

BTW, the guys that have swapped the S2k rear from stock 4.11 to 4.44 all swear by the mod. They say the car is considerably quicker in acceleration all over the place.

I'm going to try this mod, I'd be happy to report how it goes if anyone is interested.

I did it on my Mustang and it made a huge difference (4/10 sec faster). Looking forward to gears for the Z (with an ECU or speedo correction solution).
