I have been researching this as well. So far I have only heard of a few trans fluid cooler installs. There is an older thread on G35driver where a B&M cooler was installed but the pictures no longer show up. I was planning on visiting my local auto shops to see what they have available in stock as I wanted to install one this weekend. I will let you know how it goes. If I can't find a solution locally, I will be ordering the B&M 70264 model.

Talking with Andre form Edge racing converters . He told me if your motor isnt running hot , you dont really need a tranny cooler . He also said if you are running a little hot and want to add a tranny cooler . Get one that only opens when the fluid gets to hot [ set temp ] He did mention that running an open tranny cooler will cool the fluid to much when the car isnt running hot

Supposedly the B&M coolers have a valve that prevents the fluid from entering the cooling fins before it reaches a certain viscosity. That's how it prevents overcooling; the fluid won't enter until it's hot enough.

I installed mine back in 2003. It's been working great. I've also used B&M coolers on two Honda cars.

Thanks to E_K's input back in 2003 I also added a B&M ATF Cooler - pictured below. I went with the small 16,000# GVW B&M cooler as that's 3.5 times the gross vehicle weight of my sedan. Probably what sold me on the B&M unit was that they claim their ATF coolers won't overcool. While the other manufacturers unit may offer the same feature, I couldn't find where they said so.

Along with the cooler I have an Edge Racing Torque Converter (I've talked with Andre at length) and a Stillen Valve Body upgrade. This combination of mods works well for me.

For those who missed Keepin' the VQ Cool in the Spring Issue of Sport Z here are a couple of pictures of the stock AT radiator. Note the core thickness and AT cooler connections.

I installed a Hayden High Performance model cooler this weekend and although it was a bit bigger than the B&M I was looking at, it fit well and the install was quite easy. I placed mine out in front of the radiator. I took the front end off the car just to make things easier, but that would not have been necessary. I have had the front end off numerous times, so I felt comfortable doing so. I did not take any pics but mine looks much like the one posted by DaveO above. I ran the fluid through the added tranny cooler, then back to the stock cooler. I figured that way the fluid would be returned closer to stock temps if over-cooled by the tranny cooler during the first go-round. I did not need any additional installation hoses or parts as the included items were enough to complete the install. I have noticed the temp gauge is running slightly cooler even though we are seeing much higher outdoor temps, so I think it is doing its job. I wish I had an OBDII scanner to provide a more accurate assessment, but that is all I have for now.

so you just got one from your local discount or advanced auto parts? i was thinkin bout doin that they are a little cheaper and you dont have to wait.

the reason why im gettin one is cause i am goin to get an aftermarket radiator and they dont make one for a 5at car.

According to B&M, if you tube their ATF cooler after the stock ATF cooler (in the bottom radiator tank) the manufacturer's warranty is maintained. If you tube it ahead of the stock cooler it's takes quite a bit of the heat load off the stock radiator/cooling system - it's so big you know.

I've "plumbed" my auxiliary ATF cooler both ways and prefer it ahead of the stock cooler.

Default Tranny Coolers

I've had the Perma-Cool Thinline #771-1012 ( 18k GVW ) for 1.5 years & it seems to be perfect for my application. I have the Level 10 ( I guess I'm one of the few people they haven't screwed over! ) V/B & 2800 rpm stall convertor & it's rather warm down here in Louisiana. There's been no heating issues & I do drive hard.
I'm scheduling my Vortech install for this summer & will be upgrading my radiator then. I have already purchased the Koyo which does not have provisions for an A/T so I'm seriously considering the B&M Supercooler #70255 unless the rumored Stillen radiator for A/T's makes it to market or Griffin returns my emails!! I figure that an additional plus for the B&M cooler is that the dual fans will keep air flowing across the Vortech FMIC as well.

Yep, they had different models at the different auto stores. I found the one I bought at Advanced Auto, but Autozone and some other places had them as well.

mene gene

why would you need to get another tranny cooler? can you not just keep the one you have? i will be gettin the t/c and v/b in the future and a 6mt radiator. i dont want to have to replace the tranny cooler again down the road. should i just get i high gvw rating b&m that wont overcool the fluid up front and be done with it?

more info please

The B&M ATF Cooler I bought came complete with all hoses, fittings and mounting brackets I needed to mount and plumb it. I bought extra high quality ATF hose (expensive) from NAPA but didn't need it.

A recommendation for those who are considering a "stand alone ATF cooler". Make sure it is designed for a full range of operating conditions. The ones I've been looking at have a thermostatically controlled fan for slow, stop and go traffic on hot days and some type of ATF bypass for cold days. Overheating and overcooling aren't a good thing IMO.

Check out this link.
