After using Synthetic Oil...
can you switch back to dino in a 350Z? Will it cause problems? I didn't realize that the owner's manual calls for dino oils only.
Any thoughts, hope this is right place to ask this question.

I have heard bad things about switching back.
My infiniti dept. only uses synthetic after x number of miles on the car. Its no problem.
Nissan only said that becuase they don't want people missing oil jobs "becuase they have synthetic, and it can last longer" becuase that will degrade the engine to some degree.

u talkin' a few k miles like me, or 50k -100k miles ?
(i've seen a lot about the difference of the two, and compatibility of the difference in additives and such.)
please do elaborate your opinions, whenever you can muster up the energy to type again . . .

I would imagine it won't hurt to keep synthetic in the car. I have also heard bad things about changing it over though.
And did Nissan recommend a certain brand of oil to use? Ford recommends Motorcraft for their cars (their brand of oil), so I imagine that is the only reason Nissan said to use dino oil.

Well, from what others have said on this board, the only reason Nissan does not recommend syn is because they only tested with dino oils. However, they do recommend API certified oils which most high quality syns are. I've had my honda going back and forth between syn and dino and never had a problem.

Curious Note: I switched to Mobil 1 after 10K miles, ever since my Z burns a lot of oil, but none of it noiticable from the tail pipe, the car just consumes synthetic oil. Barely burned a drop of dino. Can someone give me a brief explanation to that?

ME too!!
I switched over to Syn (mobile 1) at 3k miles and I noticed oil being burned (charing on the tail pipe). But beforethe switch it was clean. I don't beat on the car, and I waited the 1200 miles to go over 4k rpm.
Whats going on?

Now that you mention it, I do have a noticeable amount of charred tailpipe. I'd say I have to put a .5 qt of oil about every 800 to 1000 miles. No other problems that I notice.

Yes... you can always switch back safely from a synthetic to mineral oils. The only things you will sacrifice are benefits of using synthetic oil.
However, if you decide to use mineral oil for quite a while, it's not a good idea to switch to a synthetic. Most syntetics contain better detergent and additive packages that will dissolve a lot of sludge that is left by cheaper mineral oils. Sludge build-up in some higher mileage engines is what keeps the seals from leaking. When you wash the sludge away, leaks may appear.

I have 30,000 on mine and have strongly considered changing to synth. when my free oil changes are up.(not really free)This makes me hesitant from switching from the penzoil that they use because I have also heared from mechanics that engines that use penzoil have shown to have the cleanest parts. Sometimes it's good to leave a good thing alone.(I guess)

I use a Castrol 50/50 factory blend of dino and syn oil. I would therefore have to assume that there is no problem with regard to alternating between the two types or even mixing them. A number of major other oil companies also make the blended product.

Pennzoil is one of the better mineral base oils out there. You'd be fine sticking to that, or swithching to synthetic. It's your choice. If you do switch to synthetic, I think you'll find that your engine is quieter at cold startup. That's what really convinced me that switching to Mobil1 was a good call.
The most important thing is to change your oil and filter regularly.

I guess I am one of the exceptions. I did oil changes with dino oil/filter when I got the car home from the dealer, 150 miles, 500miles, 1000 miles, 2500 miles, 5000 miles, and then switched to Mobil 1 synthetic at 7500 miles. Car has never burned any oil. I do my changes every 3000 miles and the level is always the same. I don't baby the car either...I like to have a little fun.
