Ok, i have the 3.5 gear and pinion and was told a while back i needed something else to install it in my auto rear. Can i not just swap gear and pinion into my 04 touring? It has a vlsd. What do i need to complete this swap?

I notice in your mod list you have an ATI Procharger. Do you have that on the car now with the 3.9 gears? If so, are you experiencing any "traction issues" that so many warn about with the 3.9 FD? It doesn't sound like it, but I wanted to hear from someone with direct experience. Thanks.

I think it could work with the right FI
specificaly a centrifical supercharger like the procharger or vortech where all the torque and power are up high - possibly a single turbo maybe too, as long as you're for sure under 400whp, preferably less than 380whp
I don't think it'd work at all well with a twin turbo setup or roots supercharger because they have too much initial torque early in the rpm range
To make it work though at all, you'll need maximum grip - so wide tires 295, good sticky tires, no toyos or nittos, go with michellin PS2 or BFG KD or bridgestone S03's ro RE50's etc.
You'll need an LSD
if there still isn't good traction, then maybe some more weight in the back in the form of a rollbar or subwoofer

Generally higher FD gear ratios make for better acceleration but sacrifices top speed. It is the reason I think Nissan actually put a 3.54 rear end in our cars to begin with instead of a higher ratio 3.9, 4.10, 4.11 etc. because the Z is not designed to be a drag car.
So my question is...how much does top speed suffer from doing this, possibly negligible?

10% in theory, but I think it's less in reality
If you get your ECU flashed to raise your rev limiter, you'll gain it all back anyway
you gotta ask yourself how often do you drive 160mph? There's only so many high speed ovals around the country. You'll otherwise rarely reach that speed on a road course, you'll never reach it in a drag race or auto x. So that leaves public roads going 160mph...

anyway, if your goal is to always go above 150mph, then these gears are NOT the mod for you.

If your car has the limiter removed...and you have enough power....your top end is reduced from 181mph...to 167mph...
