Default 350evo 3.9 gear swap....one word...WOW!

My car continues to amaze me. For those that don't know, I have an '05 G35 sedan 6MT with the following modifications:

Ported Crawford plenum
Z-tube
JWT Popcharger
Cleaned up throttlebody
Fujitsubo Legalis-R exhaust
Unorthodox crank pulley
Rogue Engineering shifter
Volk Racing 19x8.5 (fronts), 19x9.5 (rears) Gunmetal Progressive spoke wheels
Bridgestone Potenza S03 tires 245/30-19 (fronts), 275/30-19 rears
Eibach Pro kit springs
Black painted OEM grill (I took the billet one off for now).

Yesterday night I drove down to Houston, Texas to have my 350evo 3.917 gear set installed at Texas Auto Gear this morning. 6 hours later the gearset is in the car and I am rolling home. My impressions?

I haven't really gotten on it too much, but on the highway, it pulls from 80 mph to 100 mph in 5th gear in about 3 seconds flat

6th gear pull is stout as well. No more waiting for the "6MT" powerband. No more down shifting to pass other cars. Response is phenominal. This modification is the single best mod I have done to date. 30 to 50 mph 2nd gear acceleration lopped a FULL second (from 4 seconds to 3 seconds). Best of all, I only lost about 1.5 mpg coming back from Houston, when compared to the trip out there.

I highly recommend this modification to anyone who wants to stay N/A. Completely TRANSFORMS the car. If anyone is looking for a top notch installer for gearsets in Texas, give David @ Texas Auto Gear a call at 281-448-4371.

I can't wait to install the Crawford headers and high flow cats next....

I've got this sitting in my room, just waiting to be installed. I havent really been motivated to get this installed, but your review has got me wanting this in bad! How is the 45-100 run now?

I'm going to put another 250 miles on my new rear end before I start really hanging it all out.

As others have posted before me and as I have commented before, the 3.9 FD from 350EVO is a N/A must for people wanting to bring out a whole new dimension in the Z.

It is great .. better pulling, torque, acceleration though all gears .. especially 2-6.

Now on phase 2 of mods .. UR crank pulley going in soon .. and then very likely the NISMO bushing kit & Michelin PS2's at the same time or shortly thereafter.

Where do you get the NISMO bushing kit?

It's not a cheap modification....The gearset is $849.00 from 350evo

Installation was $500.00

But then again, I think it was well worth it....

I took the car out again last night after I posted. After some in city driving, it *feels* like I took 500 pounds out of the car. Driveability is much improved, especially part throttle acceleration and response. 4th gear acceleration from 40 mph is very very nice. Pulls much much stronger. Since I have the 298hp 6MT version, I always thought the low end punch of this car was too soft. I'd lay into the throttle and have to "wait" to get to 4500-5000 rpm for the engine to really start stretching it's legs. Now, there is no more "lull" in the powerband. If you have an '05 35th Ann. Edition, Track edition or '05 6MT G35, this modification really makes the powerband feel much more linear (not nearly as peaky feeling). Also, When you shift at redline, it drops the engine rpm right in the "sweet spot" every time whereas with the stock gearset, the 1st to 2nd gear and 2nd to 3rd gear shifts drop the rpm out of the sweet spot which really hinders acceleration in the lower gears. 1st gear acceleration really doesn't feel all that much different. I expected it to be much "shorter" but it really doesn't feel that way at all. Also, it's not hard at all to get a chirp in 3rd and 4th gears during shifting (not even powershifting).

I am excited about getting the Crawford headers and high flow cats now. After that I will leave my car alone for awhile.

Do you have the viscous limited slip? I saw no reason to change the LSD so I stayed with the VLSD.

a few questions.....

I see the estimated cost of this mod is about $1300-1400 (installed). would this in any way cause warranty problems? i know about the moss-magnusson act...but what im saying is....would a dealer notice the gear swap? what would they have to do to notice the swap?

No way a dealer could know without dissambling the rear end. I doubt they could tell by driving around the block....
