Default has anyone actually removed their AC?

people always talk about it, no one ever does it

what are people's results?

is removing it really saving 20 lbs and adding 8whp?

I think the rule of thumb is for every 100 lbs you take off your car, you gain 0.1 in the 1/4 mile. Somebody correct me if i'm wrong on this.

I couldn't live without my AC out, but I guess you plan on using your car for racing only?

I have my belt off and I had no real gains on the dyno.

ok well that's good info then
that was half the reason I was considering it

I might be getting a daily driver car and wouldn't need AC at all in the fall/winter/spring where I live

With the clutch engagement mechanism on the front of the compressor the parasitic drag is quite minimal. If you pull off the belt the compressor pulley just spins quite nicely on it's own.

I've had mine out for a few months. The unit weights about 15-20 lbs.

It's not how much weight you remove, it's were you remove it from.

When I got my carbon fiber hatch it dropped at least 100 lbs and the rear rode stiffer, expansion joints on the freeway were definitely more noticeable.(until the weight of rollcage came around) But the car didn't handle much better than before.

When I took the AC out,(aprox. 20lbs) it came from the far front of the car and made turn-in easier and the car really handled better.

Weight coming off the front end will make the car handle better and reduce understeer, weight coming off the rear will reduce the traction to the rear wheels, but the car will be lighter and faster, but the car will oversteer more.

And don't forget to get rid of those stock springs. I'd like to see the ride height of a Z on stock springs with a couple hundred pounds removed.

.
you mean it'll understeer (not oversteer) if you take weight off the rear right?

yeah, I swear when I put my hawker battery in I could slightly feel it - though probably in my head. It's behind the front wheels anyway so that minimizes the distrubtion fully to the front some

Understeer = When you turn the wheel but the car doesnt turn where you want it to go... like pushing the front wheels... (the plane landing with the gear messed up was a perfect example of super extreem understeer.. hehe)

Oversteer = When you turn the wheel and it turns more then you want it to and you can go into a spin easier... Removing weight from the rear will make the car oversteer easier since the rear end can come around easier...

We took the A/C out of my T2 racecar, the Compressor with bracket and pulley weighted around 25 pounds. The A/C condensor is aluminum and doesnt weight a lot, maybe 3-4lbs and we also removed all the A/C lines, figure another couple of pounds.

The weight doesnt sound like a lot but it is off the front off the car which makes a differnece in the handling. Also, with the Condensor removed the radiator gets better airflow keeping the water temp down on hot days at the track.

My A/C clutch must be stuck with it engaged. My pulley doesn't spin very easily at all.

That's odd...I pulled my belt off and I can give it a whirl and it will spin for 5-8 seconds on it's own.

My pulley won't do that. I need both hands to turn it. I think it must be stuck on the on position. I am not an AC guy so I will have the dealer check it out.

Possibly a seized bearing in the pulley.
