Default Help! RPM go high but no power on the wheels

Hi, Recently my Z is acting weird. (I have slightly under 40k miles on my 03 touring 6spd)

It mostly happend on 5th and 6th gear (it happends on 2nd-4th but not often as 5th and 6th). I hit the gas at about 2500-3500 RPM then, Engine gets really loud and RPM goes high very fast (like hitting gas when its on nutural) but I dont get much power (go higher speed very gently like pushing gas padal normally). So yesterday night I tried a few times then after I parked my Z, I smell something like clutch burning.

What do I have to do or whats the problem, anyone experienced that?

Yep, sounds to me like you fried your clutch. How do you have 4000 miles in 2-3 years?

Sorry, My bad. I have slightly under 40,000 miles on mine. Is this usual time to replace clutch?

I just put in a new one with just under 40,000 on it. But it was fine at the time. I just did it because Nissan put in a new 6sp tranny on warranty. Whenever the tranny is out put in a new clutch, that's all. Do you slip the clutch a lot when getting off the line?

depends on your driving tendencies, do you like to gas it hard off the line? do you power shift? your clutch should be longer than 40k, but if you work the clutch, it will wear down fast. Time to go get a Tilton combo, or tri-plate carbon clutch if your FI.

I don't powershift, street race or autocross/drag race etc types of things but i do hit gas hard and downshift sometimes. not aggressive as hard sports car drivers but not easy as mom's Z.

Wow.. All goes to simple one answer. I guess my clutch is gone.....
Then I think its time to join the other tread about perfomrance clutch/flywheel that is on-going now. Thanks brothers.
When we gonna have dead clutch club party the? haha.

Oh then one more Q.
How much do you guys pay for clutch/flywheel installation?
Or any DIY forum with some pictures? (then how long does it take??)

Thanks all.

Cost is around 500 bucks (labor) give or take, and is not a DIY unless you know what you are doing and have the equipment, that tranny can hurt you if you are not careful.

I pulled my trans off while laying under the car....lowered it down to my chest...and then set it beside me under the car. Very easy if you know what you're doing..but if you're not ready for the weight of a 100lb transmission you could be in big trouble.

Just a little FYI about the clutch issue. I removed my stock clutch @ 36K miles in preperation for my Twin Turbo install and it looked nearly brand new. I beat on the car constantly on the street and on the track, but I DO NOT ride the clutch.

WOW used your body as a tranny stand, not something I want to try, one mistake and it could be painful.

As for the wear I agree, I took mine out at 30K total miles 10K of which were with the TT and it looked fine and that included some track days and lots of fun driving so it is not the clutches that are bad it is user error

Yea...it was a pretty good time. Putting it back in the car was a whole different story...had to lift the trans onto a jack and use to jack to hoist it up since I didn't have enough leverage under the car (on jackstands) to pick up the trans. I do have to say though...pulling the trans in a RWD car is a piece of cake compared to a FWD car. I'd much rather pull the trans in my Z than any FWD car out there.

Sounds like clutch but I had my 105k on my Camaro no problems. My Ranger had 112k never replaced or had a clutch problem at all, and I drive the sh*t out of my cars. Not to sound like smart a$$ but do you ride your clutch or downshift each gear this will also wear a clutch out fast.

Good to know cuz I've done a clutch on my old fwd cars twice on jack stands
