Many fine products have been mentioned and are excellent, but you can get oil and lube for all applications in our Z from Amsoil, without 'mixing'.

Just to confirm, Royal Purple MaxGear 75w90 says (on their website) that it is good for both GL-4 and GL-5 applications. That being said, shouldn't it be safe and the right thing for both MT and Diff, correct?

I changed both at the same time, early on- around 3K miles. The 6MT to make the shifting easier and the rear diff just to get any initial shavings out.
Everything has performed flawlessly over the past 2.5 years.
It sounds so dirty when you call it lube...

+1. I wouldnt trust any other oil than OEM whether its Amsoil or Royal Purple, people fall for marketing all the time and overly exaggerate about the oil they use. And people want to justify what brand they use psychologically, so they promote their brand to make themselves feel better.

Anyone have a take on this?

Just had my oil changed and I went with NAPA brand Premium Pure Synthetic. Little known fact is that they have a contract with Mobile 1 to make all their oil just stamp a NAPA sticker on it and sell it for a $1 cheaper a quart but its the same stuff. Saved some money and made a hell of a difference then the crappy stuff the dealer put in. I have heard Royal Purple is the way to go but very expensive so I was thinking of investing in it for my rear end. Is this worth the cash and also is it hard to change the rear diff. fluid? Comments please!

I called Royal Purple today and they said you can use the 75w90 Max Gear in both tranny and diff. Max Gear has both a GL-4 and GL-5 rating.

Does anyone know of a good site where you can buy Royal Purple in something other than cases or drums of it?

Odd coincidence. I JUST changed my tranny and diff. oil today. I went with Mobil 1 in the diff. It took a little under 2 qts. I went with the OEM Nissan MT fluid, it took about 3 1/4qts. I figured better safe then sorry(warranty). The Synchromesh seemed to be for very specific GM and or Chrysler apps. (so the label made it seem). So, I took it for a test drive after and of course the diff. felt smooth as butter(it always has) but the tranny still had what some call the "notchiness" when shifting. I doubt a fluid could change that unless its some seriously heavy shiet and that would prob. create sludge in the tranny and screw stuff up. Word to the wise get a suction gun that can hold as much as poss. That's the most labor intensive part of the maintenance.

Well I stopped by my local Nissan Dealership Parts and they want $11/qt. So now I'm thinking of ordering 4 qts of the Amsoil.

I bought Royal Purple Max Gear 75W90, it is designed for both tranny and diff. Meets both GL-4 and GL-5 specs. Order it on-line for less than $9 per quart. Will be putting it in next week.

I've read that the GL-5 could hurt more than help in the tranny though.

that's why I said it was rated at both GL-4 & 5, according to RP website and confirmed with a phone call.

I used a 50/50 mixture of Redline MTL and MT90 in my Transmission, and Straight MT90 in my differential. I noticed a net improvement in operation of both the transmission and diff.

Since I am making the swap soon, let me ask you...

The Z 6mt tranny calls for manual or ATF?

The 350Z diff calls for manual?

MT90 is stright gear oil. What is the MTL?

Did you use a differential additive?

How many Qts for the DIFF?

How many Qts for he Tranny?

The 6mt calls for 75W-85 GL-4 compliant (do not use fluid made for GL-5). Since Redline does not make a specific 75W-85 fluid, I did a 50/50 mix of:
* Redline MTL: 70W-80
* Redline MT-90: 75W-90
That brought it it approximately the correct spec.

The 350Z diff calls for manual?
The diff calls for 75W-90 oil, which is why I used Redline MT-90

MTL simply stands for Manual Transmission Lube (70W-80)

Did you use a differential additive?
No

How many Qts for the DIFF?

How many Qts for he Tranny?
