Is the tranny covered under the 3yr or the 5yr powertrain warranty?

No, it's nowhere near silky. It should feel a bit notchy but nothing excessive. And no grinding.

+1. Although I was quite worried at first because of the unusual noises it makes. I still grind slightly (more like it catches) on my 1st to 2nd shift when, cold especially. I hear higher viscosity tranny fluid (Royal Purple notably) helps the situation.

Yeah, once things warm up it all gets smoother for me. I don't grind, but I it does catch going 5th-6th for me on occassion.

And yes, it's a noisy SOB.

I recently change tranny/diff oil to syth. RoyalPurple Max Gear, It could all be in my head but it feels alot better. I didnt have any previous problems (grinding, notchy, rough) but the nissan manual show to change tranny/diff oil around 36K am around 31K

If you push in the clutch, but it does NOT disengage, you need a new clutch.
If the drive shaft does not turn, you need a new transmission.

Mine catches going from 1st to 2nd when cold. I have to hold the clutch and wait a second before going into 2nd to avoid this. Once I drive a few miles it stops. I'm scared this will get worse.

when i fire her up on a cold night/day my 1st-2nd shifts are TERRIBLE. its been like this since day one. i wouldnt worry about it. once the tranny heats up it gets rather smooth. now if you hear a nasty grinding sound when you select a new gear with the clutch depresssed....its time for a new tranny

My first to second shift. I still hate the way it shifts. There is no way this is a sports car if it keeps up like that. Corollas are passing me because I have to shift so hard to get it into second quick otherwise I have to shift slowly so it goes in smoothly. Any ideas why this is happening? Is this normal? Is that what you guys mean by notchiness?

Yeah, with mine if I don't go slow into second especially when it's still cold it will grind on me. I only have 900 miles on my car too. This really sucks!
