If it's not adjusted right it can damage the tranny.
If it is of low quality it can make noise.
However, I have installed a few short shifters in the past with mixed results.
I bought a Hurst shifter and the lower portion of the shifter was too short so it popped out of the shifter rail. Luckly, it didn't do any damage to the rail. However, it very easily could have. I bought a B & M and it had the correct lower section on it. I documented this and wrote to Hurst with the mods they needed to make. Never heard back from them. However, I measured a unit six months later and it had been changed. Too bad they didn't pay me for engineering it for them.
So, the answer is yes you can damage you tranny using a short shifter if it isn't designed correctly. However, if it is designed correctly it shifts much tighter and better than a stock unit with little or no more vibration / noise.
They are too hard to install in a 350Z. I'd say 45mins if you have ramps.
The one I tried on the Z vibrated so badly I took it out and returned it.
There are some on the market that are not supposed to make noise. PM me if you want a link to them. However, I haven't seen one with the stock shifer on it yet so I can't confirm that.
Good luck.....
