Default Tranny Build Up? Tranny failed at the track.

Well tonight at the track I hit second gear and got nothing. It happened twice back. I launched and would shift from 1st to 2nd, but despite the fact that the shifter was well seated into the 2nd gear position, all that happened was the motor revved up as I let out the clutch.

The good news is that 2nd gear still works when you drive normally. The gear engagement is just a little rougher than before. I am assuming the synchros are shot, but am only speculating as I am not a tranny expert.

I knew it was coming as my tranny has been grinding bad from 1 to 2 shifts. This is my second transmission and there will be no more free replacements as my Z is no longer under warranty.

What I am wondering is, since I am pulling the tranny one day soon, are there any performance tranny shops that handle building up the 350 Z tranny. If I could find one to make the tranny stronger, that would be great!

Thanks for any info!

You may be right about the clutch as I could definately smell it burning last night. The clutch has been feeling heavier for the last week or so as well.

If the clutch is burnt though, why is it only slipping that bad when I shift to 2nd. I would think that the launch is harder on it. I slip the clutch when I launch due to street tires.

when my last clutch started to slip it would only be in 6th or 4th...

but thats what it sounds like it is to me...

isn't the tranny covered under warranty longer than 3 years?

I am sure it is, however I am over the 60,000 mile portion of the powertrain warranty as well so that wouldn't apply.

What I would really like to do it get the tranny built stronger if possible. If it was indeed the tranny that failed and not the clutch and considering that it is my second tranny, I would rather just pay to have it built stronger.

If anyone has information on where I can get this done, please let me know!

Thanks

That would be great if you were right as I know where an extra clutch just happens to be laying around.

We'll see.

Does it feel..like..uhm i'm not sure how to describe it.. does teh clutch kinda get sticky and feel like a dead log? Thats how mine felt when I burnt it up accidentally. Fortunately it got better as i used it. Ive learned teh stock clutch SUCKS when its cold. Itll loose grip and u'd never know untill ur redlining and grinding the cluthc.

Not sure if anyone is rebuilding the Z trannies, but the first place I would try is SGP. They seem to be on top of things down there.

I destroyed my tranny also and it did something similiar to what you describe. My tranny started grinding from 2nd to 3rd and from 4th to 5th. It finally wore the 3rd and 5th gears enough that under full throttle the gears would slip but under normal driving it would still hold. All other gears worked fine under full throttle just not 3rd and 5th. I thought it was the clutch but when we took the clutch out it still look it great shape. Turned out 5th and 3rd gears were worn so much that the couldn't hold the that much torque.

What did you end up doing? Did you just get another OEM tranny?

Yes, just had the OEM tranny rebuilt. I wish I didn't do that but at the time I couldn't afford to buy a dog box or anything like that.
