AAM MaxFlow Big Pump Upgrade – 350Z/G35

Keeping with our commitment of providing innovative and reliable new products to our customers, we are proud to release our newest upgrade for the serious Z/G enthusiast. After 8 months of research and development, we have designed the necessary solution to safely fuel 700+HP, the AAM MaxFlow Big Pump Upgrade. In conjunction with the AAM Return Fuel Rail Solution (Stage 1 Fuel Rail System), our new fuel solution is a bolt in affair that will complete any high horsepower 350Z or G35. Using professionally proven technology and design we have again raised the bar for the 350Z & G35 – breaking new ground so you can break records!

HOW IT WORKS

The customer supplied Walbro 255lph Pump and OEM Pump Assembly work together to become a basic transfer pump system which operates near 0 psi. This relieves the already overdriven Walbro from the bulk of stress and thus extends its life immensely. The use of a transfer pump is not only very well documented but used by many OEM models. BMW, Porsche, Mercedes, Audi, Volvo, and Saab, have used a transfer pump design for many years. In addition to OEM’s, this technology is found in many race cars, from Formula One to WRC.


The transfer pump provides fuel to a surge tank (also referred to as a swirl pot or swirl tank). The surge tank has one distinct advantage; it ensures that the Walbro 255 (customer supplied) is always able to supply an excessive amount of fuel to the new in-line pump.





The surge tank ensures that the main supply pump is never without fuel, regardless of steering angle, g-forces, or launch forces. This is accomplished because the surge tank always remains full. Even though there is more security in this design we still recommend that the main tank be maintained at ¼ fuel level or higher. This recommendation is given because slosh and potential loss of fuel feed to the transfer pump still occurs in the main tank when it is less than ¼ full. This is because the factory tank assembly was designed with limited additional baffles to control fuel slosh. It mainly uses a small canister that fills with excess fuel. This canister is almost like a fuel tank within a fuel tank. When sloshing occurs there is potentially not enough fuel to the fill canister that surrounds the OEM pump assembly. In a bone stock car this issue would be of little or no concern, but with a high-horsepower car we have increased the fuel use exponentially. The factory never accounted for this.


You might be wondering how the Walboro fuel pump can support enough fuel to supply the larger Bosch fuel pump? Because the Walboro fuel pump is operating near 0 psi and the Bosch pump is operating at ~50+psi. The following chart in the “FLOW” section shows the Walboro provides ~78GPH near 0psi vs. the Bosch flowing ~63.4GPH at 50psi.

There is so much excess fuel that we must have a secondary line to relieve the surge tank of fuel and reroute it back into the main tank.

Below is a chart outlining the characteristics of the Walbro 255 and Bosch pump as a function of flow versus pressure:


As you can see from the above table and associated graph the Bosch pump really shines over 30psi of fuel pressure when compared to the Walboro. Generally as pressure increases the flow decreases in an electromechanical pump. This is a lose/lose situation for a forced induction vehicle because of the need to offset fuel pressure versus positive intake manifold pressure. In other words, to provide a consistent and stable tuning platform a pound of fuel pressure must be added for each pound of positive intake manifold pressure (boost). This is where the AAM MaxFlow Big Pump system delivers and significantly increases fueling reliability in the 500+rwhp territory.

Advantages of the AAM Max Flow Big Pump Upgrade:

By maintaining the OEM fuel pump assembly (with customer supplied Walbro 255lph pump) we are able to offer many benefits over a large in-tank or twin in-tank pump setup such as:
  • Straight forward installation
  • Increased reliability
  • Retention of many factory features such as the stock fuel level gauge, factory fuel pump relay system, and fuel tank fuel transfer process

This system maintains the quality and reliability of the factory components since there is no need to modify them. When extraneous components are packed into the factory fuel tank, as with large in-tank setups and twin in-tank setups, interferences are created and reliability is compromised.

Main Advantage of a Single Pump vs. Twin Pump System:

With a parallel twin pump setup, failure of one pump can be extremely detrimental. Unnoticeable under normal loads and start-up, internal or electrical failure of one of the fuel pumps can lead to extremely lean and dangerous operating conditions. We feel that this is a compromised situation. It has been documented that several high horsepower Supras have suffered engine failure due to broken Twin Pump Systems. In keeping true to our promise to our customers, it would be a disservice to offer lower cost components that run the risk of potential engine damage. No mainstream OEM manufacturer uses this type of twin in-tank pump design; they’re unreliable, un-predictable and for these reasons, not a good choice for our clients.

WHY BOSCH

Essentially we have chosen the Bosch pump because of the brands unrivaled reliability and superb performance. It is quiet, efficient, and compact. Although there are less expensive options available on the market we believe 100% that this is the only choice for this application and our demanding 350Z/G35 customer. As many may know, Bosch is the founder of modern fuel injection and their designs are constantly on the leading edge of performance and technology. The Bosch unit is also one of the quietest high performance pumps available. At idle this pump is so quiet it can barely be heard over the exhaust!

HOW MUCH POWER WILL THE AAM STG 2 SETUP SUPPORT

To determine the flow requirement of different injectors we must first determine HP potential. By using the chart below we can easily do this:
  • First we must convert c.c.’s to lb/hr.
  • We then multiply the lb/hr by the number of injectors (6) to give us the total lb/hr of all the injectors at 100% duty cycle.
  • This number is then reduced to a safe and reliable 80% duty cycle in the following column.


NEXT:
We then take the GPH flow rates of the Bosch fuel pump and multiply it by a conservative and safe 6.2 pounds per gallon of fuel.

This results in the following chart:


As we can see even at pressure of well over 110psi the Bosch pump flows so much fuel it can support 720cc injectors at 80% duty cycles! This is enough fuel flow for ~780 + B.H.P.! The Bosch pump can also support six 850cc injectors near 80% duty cycles all the way up to 80psi! Close to 900 B.H.P.! With leaded fuels (race gas), due to their heavier mass these pound per hour calculations only increase, thus allowing more boost. All of these numbers generally trend on the conservative side and during actual use we have seen much higher numbers produced with these components. Due to the fact that individual cars have different setups we felt it was best to provide this information with a conservative tone. Only actual vehicle testing will allow you to find the limits.

noticed an error on the diagrams tho... where it says "passenger side" and "drivers side" is reversed. As you know, the factory pump is on the passenger side rather then driver side.

Some of the duals MAY have a small clearance issue with the Line from the surge tank to the pump This is why the brackets have the ability to slide left to right. Also the line is cover in the Fiberglass heat shield.

This will work with all stock or stock like exhausts becasue it sits far in-front to the muffler. Most of the duals we have seen including our own clears the surge tank with enough room for safety.

Very very very limited. The entire assembly sits above the bottom of the differential and is essentially right behind it. Bascially from the front there is no way unless a pole shoots up after the rest of the car has rolled foward. From the rear a small pole centered between the two wheels that sticks up a high as the bottom of the rear bumber, but you would still hear and fell it hit the bumper first. These cases are soooo unlikely that we feel very confident with its placement.
