Default 300+ hp on stock Z

I've heard rumors that the stock setup of the VQ35 (on the 350Z) is capable of 300+hp (as much as 315 from what I've gathered), but nissan detuned the engine (read: less agressive timing, a/f ratios) because they didnt want any problems to occour during the Z's re-launch.
I was wondering if anyone could confirm this or have any input?

Up to 300hp from the engine stock wouldn't suprise me, I'm sure when the Nismo ECU is available here it'll probably turn out around 300. 315 might be pushing it though, that's a gain of nearly 40hp just from a chip...pretty much unheard of in my own experience.

<--- dummy; so whats IIRC mean?

detuned might include intake and/or exhaust. perhaps rather than straight detuning, they quieted it down a bit. the reason we havent unlocked that with intakes and exhaust is that the computer is limiting it. but with a chip, perhaps intake and exhaust will net some real gains.

there were many rumors of 315hp before launch, and a few that it was detuned for insurance reasons. tho some hoped they were lieing and said 287, but dynos have proven that untrue.

"IIRC" = "If I Recall Correctly"

Not a technical abbreviation, just a text abbreviation like "IMHO"

Every car is somewhat detuned from the factory. Meet emissions, gas mileage, reliability of motor, etc.

That's not true. The Yugo was a tried and true performer, a supercar in shopping cart's clothing. Don't worry about the paper specs... Just turn the key, drop the clutch, and prepare to get thrown back in your seat!

Yugo?!?!..that's funny. There was a Yugo for sell on autotrader close to my town (Raleigh, NC). $500.....1 full running Yugo plus one full parts car. Why I didn't jump all over that I don't know. Ok, not related, just funny to me. $500 for a car and a "half".

When Nissan is claiming 287 HP, is that at the crank, or what is getting down to the road? I have only seen one post so far on the dyno of a Z, and the person who did it claimed to be inexperienced, and didn't know what they were doing. What kind of numbers are these getting?

Speaking of detuning, the LS1 in the Vette puts down roughly 350 HP, while in the Z28's and TA's it is only putting down 310. Those are 2002 numbers, by the way. These numbers are also what are being put to the road.

EVERY car manufacturer rates their car's HP at the crank.

I received 256 rwhp on a Dynapack.

As for the HP on the LS1s you're speaking of, I'm assuming you mean at the crank.

Average stock dyno on an LS1 F-Body (Cambirds) is 300-310. I'm going in a few weeks, I'll be sure to let you know what I put down.

Do you mean at the wheels or crank?

LS1 Vettes are certainly not putting down 350 to the wheels, stock. Z06s are however.

Funny that you should say that.I`ve just recieved a subscribers e mail from Autoexpress magazine over here in the UK.It states that aside from the normal Z engines there will be a 300 HP version available as a flagship model in 2004.It also said that it will only be available in Europe! That`s what it says anyway.
However,if it`s any consolation it looks like we`ll be paying more for the Z in the UK than you lot over there(bugger!).

Stock LS1 Cambirds are putting 300-310 HP AT THE WHEELS. Some factory freaks have hit 320.

I mispoke earlier, most LS1 Vette's are also putting 310ish HP at the wheels. Z06's are dynoing in the 335-350 range.

All the MFG's state their numbers at the crank. However, some of those vehicles are underrated (so as not to compete with a higher priced model with essentially the same engine) so when dyno's are done they end up getting about the same at the wheels. Unfortunately, the Z is not one of those cars. The 287 is crank HP, and at the wheels people seems to be getting between 230 and 240.

What's the difference between the engine in the Z and the G35 SC that it is rated lower? Intake? Exhaust? I'm assuming most mods can be put on either, save for a cat back due to the difference in length of the cars.
