Quick differential question...

This is probably a dumb question for some, but nonetheless I don't know the answer...
If I remove my Quaife LSD for a few days, will the car still drive? I know an open diff car like the base model Z doesn't have an LSD, but I am wondering if removing my LSD will make it an open diff car or will it make it immobile?
The reason I ask is, I have to send my Quaife in for some warranty work and it will be gone for a few days. If I take it to a shop to have it un-installed I would need to be able to drive it home, and then back to the shop for re-installation.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm not sure about the main question, but I recently changed my rear pumpkin and have my original 3.3 open if you need to borrow one. The shop would need to do a couple of component transfers to make it work for the Z but that's an option if you need it.

FX is all good, you gonna be at Irwindale on the 27th? Let me know if you need the pumpkin. The only thing needed to change is the companion flange for the driveshaft since the G/Z is different with my FX.

rookie - Yeah I will be there so long as I get this diff problem fixed. The Quaife is only putting power to one wheel for some reason and that doesn't do well for drifting. Good news is Quaife says its only a 3 day turnaround. I want to have it mailed out by Tuesday though, just to be safe. If for some reason it will take longer, I may have VRT overnight me a Nismo or something for the event.

You cannot do this. The drive shaft turns the pinion, the pinion gear turns the ring gear. The ring gear is bolted to the differential. The differential turns the axles. Take out any one part in this chain and you have a non working vehicle.

As 350Zteve pointed out, the differential is what drives the axles from the ring gear. If VRT were to overnight you a Nismo, you'd have to replace the axle stubs as well. Same if you went to put your original VLSD back in.
Cheapest and easiest option, and it looks like you're going that way, is to use roneski's backup pumpkin because then its just a several hour swap. I had wanted to keep my original pumpkin as a backup just for the just for a situation like yours, but it didn't work that way when I did my 3.9/Quaife install.
BTW, any idea what caused your Quaife to need repair?

Also keep in mind you cannot just simply put another differential in. The install of a differential requires special tools to measure the backlash thrust movement of the ring gear teeth to pinion teeth alingment. Mess that up and you ruin the gears.

helldorado - I have no clue what went wrong with the diff. Maybe excessive heat?
350Zteve - I will be having a professional shop do the un-install / re-install.

You are correct, in that most drifters prefer a full locking 2 way clutch style diff, becuase it tends to give better ****-end control when you are at radical angles.
But lots of circuit racers love using the Quiafe on a road circuit.
