Ed you have the LSD right? Not base model? (I'm not sure if it makes a difference)

I'll talk to you later about what kind of tools you have and we'll work something out. Worst case scenario you can bring it to my apartment in west LA and we'll do it here...

You can take some initiative and buy 2 quarts of the Redline 75W-90 plus 4 quarts of MT-90 (if that's what you want to use) here

http://store.summitracing.com/egnsea...362+115+400236

And get 4 of these washers
part number 110264n200

from performance nissan oem site

Does the dealership change the diff fluid at the 30,000 mile maintainance?

I got the maintainance done but that was 16,000 miles ago.....and if they didn't change it then, its never been changed

You'll have to ask the dealer if it's included in the normal 30k service. Each dealer is different.

Hey Wired I see you did not do the MTL/MT-90 mix in the tranny as some do. Perhaps it is a little thin for for some but is there reason why some suggest to mix the two?

I would think after putting in synthetic fluid etc., it should last at least 60k miles...

Otherwise if you're going to do it at the dealer I'd say maybe 30k

rear diff clicking has nothing to do with fluid - it has to do with retorquing the axle bolts

I'm getting a crunch on 5th gear now so hopefully when I change fluids it will go away

There are different parts list such as one says 2 crusher washers while another thread says 4. Can someone verify what exactly is needed?

4 jackstands
rags
pump
diff fluid how many?
tranny fluid how many?
crusher washers how many?

You won't have an LSD unless it's aftermarket.

MT-90 will work for the trans (4 quarts)

and 75W-90 "Gear Oil" for limited slip diff (2 quarts) will work for you.

If you have the base model without limited slip differential, you might want to check out "75W-90 NS" ... Not sure though. It's probably best to ask someone from redline or wherever you're buying your oil. http://www.redlineoil.com

As mentioned in THIS THREAD: https://my350z.com/forum/engine-drivetrain-and-forced-induction-diy/131098-changing-the-differential-transmission-oil.html

allen wrench 10mm or hex wrench 10mm
floor jack
4 jackstands
rags
drain pan
fluid transfer pump or suction gun
diff fluid 2 quarts
tranny fluid 4 quarts

crush washers

You need at least 2 to replace the drain plug washers, but it's safer to buy 4 so you can replace the fill plug washers as well. Most people say "they looked fine" but the reality is you can't un-crush metal.

The diff doesn't click, as mentioned, it is the axles that click. Yes I had the axle clicking. Performance Nissan fixed it for free (TSB).

Update... I really feel like the synchros work better than before.

I always rev-match on downshifts but sometimes you just don't give it enough "blip" and the synchros have to take over. Well the synchros definitely feel a bit smoother than before with MT-90

I bought 6 quarts of 75W90. I used 4 for the trans and 2 for the diff. The trans was clean, the diff was dirty. The outcome was simple, much smoother acceleration and shifting.

About the heavy shockproof: I don't know if I would use it in my trans. Simply because I can't seem to find whether it's GL-5 or GL-4 rated.

Redline states that the heavy shockproof gear oil is not safe for synchromesh transmissions because it breaks down snychros. I personally have it in my rear diff and MT90 in the trans. I do know a few people that have used the heavy shockproof in their transmissions without any ill effects.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the reminder Wired...ordering my stuff now.

Does anyone have any experience with Specialty Formulation MTL-P? Someone mentioned it in another thread and it looks promising since it's the exact weight specified by Nissan and I do a lot of in-town, short trips where the tranny really never gets to a good operating temperature:

It is specifically recommended for applications requiring a 75w85 lubricant and works well in manual transmissions and transaxles that experience problems with low temperature shifting.

I changed out both the tranny and diff fluids at 10K miles. I did the changes independently of one another and noticed a difference immediately in both the tranny and the diff after changing the fluids. I went with Royal Purple in both and have been very happy.
