What are the dimension of the long block VQ in my 05' 350z? Length, height, width?

Thanks.

I've searched the world over, and nothing!!! Not one dimension of the VQ35DE to be found!

Does any one have a Long Block VQ35DE laying around. Could you take three general measurements for me... Length, Width and Height.

Thank you.

Which "more capaple" engine are you looking to replace it with?

So far I've seen an LS7 in a Soltice, FD3 RX-7 and a few kit cars. The engine Longblock is 385lbs compared to 500lbs for a VQ35DE. The weight reduction is 115lbs thanks to less cams, valves, timing chains etc. So far the initial dimensions will allow an LS7 swap. I am waiting the return news on the VQ long block donmensions as we speak, but I already have the LS7 dimensions...

LS1/ LS6 & LS1 Based Engines

So that's...
28.25" tall(oil pan to top of intake)
24.7" wide(exhaust manifold to exhaust manifold)
28.75" long(water pump to flywheel)

I'm thinking a second 350Z, older, high mileage, possibly an 03' Track model(roughly $13K), and the Crate motor(roughly $12K), 6MT tranmission(roughly $3k) then an average of $8K-$10K for misc work(drive shaft, axels, clutch, wiring, wheels, tires, suspension). I'll do the wiring my self, and have it tuned.

Roughly $36K - $40K for a 350Z with an 550HP LS7 small block. Then if I want to get crazy, I can add a cam and have head & valve train work done to take it near the 650 range.

I like the 350Z styling better than the z06 body, even though the z06 is the best looking vette ever.

Oh, yes, another crossover to the LSx side...
Why not an FD? Check these guys out:
www.hinsonsupercars.com
They specialize in stuffing the good old LSx into anything...
P.S. Keep us updated on the progress of the swap should you actually try it...

I like your thinking.

Of course, obvious questions come to my mind:
VDC?
ABS?
Other chassis electronics?

VDC is an after engine management piece that operates with +12 voltage. The VDC is monitoring wheel slippage at the drive wheels by sensors, not any engine management items. At least that's how I understand it. ABS, hmmm not sure.
Chassis electronics... I got that in the bag, bag of wires that is.

The LS7 operates on a stand alone ECM, so we might be using a hybrid system with the OEM ECU to handle all non engine management items.
We'll see, It's all on paper right now.

My limited understanding is that the VDC / ABS stuff is tied to the engine management in that it will cut throttle in certain situations. If someone knows better please correct me.

Just a thought but you might be best off with a base model, that doesn't have things like cruise control VDC etc that might be a hassle to get working or may not work at all.

JCZ, another thing I want to bring up to you, LS7's are few and far between, so your chances of discovering one in a wrecking yard are slim to none.
Buying a brand new LS7 motor from the factory, with all the accessories will run you a small fortune, if you are to spend this kind of money, you may want to get a built LS2 longblock.

The Crate LS7 is $11K retail, costs less than a built VQ Turbo setup. The LS7 has unique components to make it so different; worth the price of admission.

11K for the longblock...
Does that include the injectors, the manifolds, throttle body, etc? You'll likely need a custom radiator, custom headers, etc. Will the GM tranny fit in out tranny tunnel? Will our final drive ratio be comtatible with the GM tranny's gearing? Not to discourage you, but it is a bit foolhardy to jump into such a project before considering EVERYTHING.

I've toyed with an idea of a hybrid myself, was actually thinking about ordering an LSx FD from the Hinson supercars. There is just way too much custom fabbing involved and you will most likely pay AT LEAST as much as a built TT VQ would cost. Once again, not that I am trying to sound discouraging, but make sure that you know everything that may or will pop up before you spend a penny on the swap. Your best bet would probably be to locate a wrecked vette or a GTO and get all the parts off of it.
Oh, and do not let things like titanium connecting rods and sodium filled valves sway you towards the LS7. An LS2 stroker with extensive headwork and cams will walk all over the LS7.

Just working it out on paper right now. Thanks.
