Transmission Fluid?
Getting ready to replace the automatic transmission fluid. Manual says to use 'Nissan Matic Fluid J' and the dealership told me that is what is required. I was wondering if that was true, and if not, what other options I have? Thanks!

As posted above, use MATIC J ONLY. If you use anything else you risk messing up big time. If it was matic d you could use dexron 3, pretty much the same. But matic j is diff. SO is matic k alot of the 5 spd. at maximas use.

Under normal usage your 5AT is fill-for-life. You don't need to change it. Check your maintenance manual or check it in the maintenance section of the Nissan website. It only says that you need to inspect it a regular intervals, not replace it. If you need to replace the transmssion fluid you should only use the Nissan Matic J. If your dealership is telling you you need to change it a given intervals make him show you where it states that in the manual. If it really does need replacing, make them write it down in the workorder why it needed to be replaced.
You only need to follow Schedule 1 or Schedule 2 of the Maintenance Manual.
I hate dealers/mechanics that recommend work that's not necessary.

Word to the wise, if you change it yourself keep the receipt. Just in case the trans does lunch itself the dealership has less opportunity to F you on the warranty if you have documentation that the right fluid was used.
OH!!!!!.....make sure to use matic J.
And please don't hate me Aggro Al, some of us guys at the dealership really are trying to help our customers.

you'll need 5 at most, i usually get right around 3.5 to 4 out of mine from a level ground drain. If it's on ramps i can usually count on 4 or a little over. Make sure to do it volumetrically as well, ie. drain into a couple of cut off 1 gallon milk containers, mark with sharpie and add the exact same amount in. I screwed myself over and had a local shop do it the first time and they put about a quart too much in. I had to buy a separate OBDII reader and computer program so i could get the tranny right at 149 degrees to check the level as nissan wanted over a hundred bucks to plug it into consult.... I'm obsessive compulsive when it comes to levels and change intervals though, so YMMV.

Five will be plenty for a drain and refill. I got out a little over 4 when I did my G. If you were dropping the pan then you would need more but the remaining is in the torque converter. Just make sure to measure what you drained out and replace that figure. Also, its Matic S now if you are going with OEM stuff.

yeah, thanks. I picked up five quarts of matic s. I need to go back and get new crush washers though, wish the nissan parts rep would have reminded me while I was already there.
I hate my local dealership, but it was more cost effective to buy anything under 7 quarts in person then online.

Not to say it will be the same but I used the original crush ring with mine and no leaks. I laughed when the Infiniti dealer wanted close to $3 more a quart than the Nissan dealer about a mile away from them.
