You can use 85% of the redline, keep fluctuation in RPM, and when the engine is warm gun it (some). Its not a good idea to drive the car ridiculously hard right out of the box. I've driven mine a bit harder than I should have, but only for about 5 or 10 of the miles, and its been kept under 6500 RPM's, and I haven't been abusive on the clutch (yet).

Ive been told (by a couple of meachanics I know) that this kind of driving is ok as Peak says.....You CAN drive it hard for very BRIEF periods. By hard I mean letting the RPM's get up there a little in the zone...NOT hard off the line. They say, drive it like yur gonna drive it, Itll break in better (Im no meachanic BTW). Thats the way I broke in my 98 Z28 6 speed....didnt have any probs with it, and when I sold it with 37K on it, it ran like a raped ape. I pick my 07 Z tomorrow......Ill get on her a tad...nothing hardcore though. Anyway....what does Nissan recommend for the period...1k miles?

Peace........

Nissan says keep it under 4k RPM's, never full throttle, run it at least 3 minutes every time you crank it, let it warm up for 30 seconds to a minute before driving it, etc.

Chevy says to run an engine hard for 5 minutes, then easy for 30, then hard, repeat until 1200 miles (same time period as Nissan). But that is their crate motor break-in (at least used to be something like that). I'm not too worried, I haven't redlined it, and haven't run it past 6500 RPM, and haven't even really driven it hard for the last 300 miles so it should be fine. The hardest forces on the engine occur at peak torque, so as long as you don't redline it or have it full throttle in 2nd/3rd gears at like 4000-5000 RPM's all that often it shouldn't be horrid.

I wish I'd read the manual before I got home and not just trusted the salesman though

this is an ongoing controversy that prob wont end for a long time.

this site claims some hard driving can be a good thing.
http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

other ppl swear by a slow break in, as the manuel says, but its all up to you in the end.
