The 2007 Synthetic Oil Shootout
Since we used a 06 350Z, we thought you guys might be interested in this.
We tested a few oils since we keep hearing how oils give you horsepower, or oil helps with MPG, etc etc. We decided to try it with our shop 350Z that currently is bone stock.

The results are above, and we will be adding more results as we compile them.
We tested (OE oil - oil that was in the car from the factory), GReddy Oil, Redline, Amsoil, Royal Purple and Mobil 1. These are oils that we happened to have in stock, so we just used these. Sorry if we did not use your favorite oil - maybe next time.
We were surprised to see that some oils did in fact raise horsepower and torque ratings. We also did negative horsepower tests to test the oil viscosity.
Hope you guys enjoy the thread. As it gets compiled, we'll post the info here.

I'm hoping Motul will be on the test as well. I am debating to stay with Royal Purple or Motul.
Royal purple may make more power, but the disadvantage is that it burns faster and lead me to believe that my engine had problems with oil consumption when in reality it was royal purple getting vaporized...

So you just put in a brand, ran it on the dyno, and then emptied and put in the next brand? Hardly scientific. Besides fluctuations from one dyno run to the next, it doesn't allow consideration for any residual effects. Any G5 oil will alter the next brand's run for certain. Running some AutoRx in between dyno pulls would have been a better idea, but hard on the engine. Running an oil for at least a month would have been better. Either way, which oil makes the most power is pretty arbitrary if it doesn't protect. It's a given that any oil meeting ILSAC GF-4 requirements will be thinner and have less viscous drag. Royal Purple ought to do well, it's one of the thinnest oils out there. Even their 10W-30 has a cSt of only 10.2 @100C, according to their own website. It's no wonder it has shear problems under extreme heat and a very low HTHS score, some TT 350Z is going to run it thinking he's freed up a few horses, not realizing his oil has thinned out considerably and is contributing to sludge from acid build-up due to oxidation. There are a bunch of UOA's on Audi and VW turbo engines on the oil drop to back this up. I think this is a neat idea, but the method you've chosen eliminates any validity to it.

I admire your determination in doing this test, but its very very difficult to call a winner, IMHO. When we test cars on the dyno, simply making 5 repeated pulls can result in 2-7whp changes, and the numbers also change throughout the day. Trying to discern a single digit power increase or decrease is challenging.

Either way , i'm still going to run Amsoil in my car as normal.

I was hoping for some oil analysis sheets, not this drain the oil strap to the dyno thing. I'd rather lose a couple whp and know my engine is getting lubed properly than having the thinnest oil possible.

Sorry to say but oil will never give that much power. You are seeing the car cool down times and the dynos are never perfect or near the same dyno you did the same. The car wsa colder and colder the more you changed the oil and wasn't heatsoaked anymore. On BobIstheoilguy forums Royal Purple is the oil that people hate due to poor protection.
