Default How to break in LSD ?

How do I break in my LSD ?

I found this:

The best to break in and remove the noise is by driving in a “figure 8” pattern as shown below for about 30 minutes and let the plates rub in to form a good fit. If this initial break in is not performed and too much torque is applied to the L.S.D. at once, the plates will form strange angles. Then the chattering noise will continue and may even cause damage to the L.S.D.

From:
http://www.drifting.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6800

It says to do figure 8's for 30min's " accelerate at a rate of 20km/h for each gear .... WHAT DOSE THAT MEAN?

DO I NEED TO BREAK IN THE LSD, IF THE UNIT IS USED?

Please inform... thanks

To the OP note this link is from a Drifting website, this is instructions to break in LSD for drifting application, not normal LSD break in which I assume none is needed.

Those are the recommended break-in instructions for just about every clutch based LSD I've seen.

If its used, you can still go through the process, but if it was abused, you might not get much benefit. Did you get a complete pumpkin? Or just the differential? If you got a complete pumpkin, do a diff oil swap ASAP.

You should, and just follow the instructions above. An oil change is strongly recommended after the first 1000 miles to remove any particulates you get from break-in.

You Drive in a figure eight. Accelerate on the straight part push the clutch around the curve. Do this for 15 min. then put all that expensive oil in!

theres no need to break it in.... just drive it normal... all L.S.D's are originally like that.... you just have to get used to it... I did, it was anoying at first but i got through it....... big problem tho.... TIRES will vanish pretty fast...

The text below disagree's with you. Not breaking the unit in is asking for more noise.

Breaking Procedure of new Kaaz LSD

All new Kaaz LSD needs to be broken-in to seat the clutch plates. Applying too much torque when the unit is new will cause damage to the clutch plates and may result in plates forming a angle fit. Once these plates form an angle fit, the LSD is unable to function at 100% efficiency. This will also result in more chattering noise under low speed turns. It is very IMPORTANT to perform the breaking procedure as described below.

Chattering Noise.

All clutch type LSD's make chattering noise under low speed turns. This is normal for these types of LSD. The reason for this chattering noise under low speed turns is that the clutch plates are rubbing against each other thus giving you the limited slip action. If the breaking procedure is completed according to the diagram above and proper maintenance of the LSD is performed, the chattering noise will gradually decrease after accumalating some miles.
