Default Safe rev limit for mild NA tune

Most people seem to go turbo instead of seeking for more out of stock engine..

my mods are gonna be..

non revup engine, 268deg cams, jwt valve springs, intake and exhaust.. and UTEC

with those cams, the peak power will come around the stock rev limit which is 6600rpm.. I wish to know if it's safe to rev upto 7000~7200.

many people say 'i woudlnt go above 7000 on stock engine' but no body seems to say 'why'. Conrod, bolt, retainer, etc etc might fail, but is there anyone who has actually blown their motor NA?

There seems varied people out there, some run 7200 with cams on stock springs, some without cams, some stay 6600rpm with cams, etc etc..

any input?

Thumbs up

I dont have cams, upgraded springs or Valves and i have been reving my 03 350z engine to 7000rpms since back in 04 when the reflash came available. I have had no issues so far.

If you upgrade the springs and valves with your cam install, you should be able to rev to 7200rpm safely i would assume.

I would like to know what the other weak points in the engine would be aswell when it comes to reving the engine to a higher RPM.

Hope this helps some

Later
Todd

I revved mine to 7100 NA, never had an issue. I only used it for 1st and 2nd gear when racing, after that its utterly useless...

I agree with Alberto, after 1st and 2nd gear reving to 7000rpm is useless. But if you are upgrading your cams and it moves your power band higher then it would be a benefit.

Unfortunately we rarely ever see cars even with cams making power to 7000rpm, let alone past it, but thats due to the intake plenums design but thats another thread.

+1. You might want to swap oil pumps as well. Purchase the rev up oil pump!

7300 rev limiter on my old motor, no internal mods whatsoever, 0 issues

best pick a good header to go with that cam, or else I would not even bother fitting them

Have you seen the twin throttle body manifold that Turbo Tim has? It looks promissing for high horse power in High RPM for someone that whats to go N/A. This intake manifold with some really aggressive cams and Crawford headers I bet will get you at 300hp na or over that.

The reason most NA people dont rev beyond 7000rpm or so, is becuase the power drops off dramatically beyond that. 500-700rpm beyond your power peak is plenty, to get the job done. Beyond that, you are just creating a lot of heat, and needless inertial loads on your con rods. and bearings.

Is it the connecting rod bolts, rods, oil pump. Whats the deal with rev up oil pump, is it a direct swap and is it actually better(I don't mean just cause the rev up spins faster the oil pump must be better at high rpms thinking). Can you just throw in some arp connecting rod bolts or will the cap shift. Do the stock rods have dowel pins to prevent cap shift. I am doing the BC cams/springs/retainers so I would like to know what would be easy insurance. I know for sure somebody is going to say doing cams is a waste of time go FI so save the post, cause I already bought the parts and don't mind spending time with my car and my tools. While were at it can somebody start a cams sticky with dyno charts just to illustrate where certain cams make there power.
