Default Questions on VLSD

Hi Guys,

Got a couple of questions on VLSD.

I read from a mag that factory OEM VLSD's generally lose their characteristics after something like 60k's and it behaves like an open diff.
Is that true?

How can you tell the condition of the VLSD, do you have to open the pumpkin or something, or can you tell when you drive the car?

Do you use diff oil to replace the oil and if so what would you recommend?

Thanks.

I have always heard that the fluid breaks down (sooner than 60k) but the rest of the diff should be fine. Change your fluid often and you should be OK.

I went from an open diff to a Quaife so I can't recommend a particular type of VLSD fluid but I'm sure others can.

I use 80w-90. You should definately be able to tell the condition of the VLSD by driving it. Just take some doughnuts or sharp turns and see if you get a inner-wheel burnout or if it locks.

VLSD is a sealed unit. Changing the gear oil has no bearing on the performance of the differential itself. The only fix is replacement.
