Hey All.....a long time reader and first time poster on the my350z forums... I'm planning on buying a used Z soon but I would like to know more about the rev-up engines first.

So first of all...do I really want the rev-up engine with 300hp over the older 287hp engine?

If so...can someone please tell me which years/models of the Z will have this rev up engine?

Im not gonna do the whole YOU SHOULD SEARCH thing..its too tiring..

03-04 non rev up...6500rpm redline and 287 hp
05-06 revup ...7k redline and 300hp
07 high rev motor..7.5k redline and 306 hp under new standards..really like 315-320hp...under old standards

I think I heard somewhere in a Fifth gear video or something that the 07 runs like .1 faster in the 1/4 mile or somethign over the non-HR....but I could be wrong.

are you sure that that ALL 05s have the rev-up engine? I've read somewhere that only the 35th anniv. edition of the 2005 models have the rev-up engines...and I'd like to confirm.

 

all 05's have it..

and the 07 is about .3 to .5 faster in the quarter...then previous models...

 

not all 05's have it. only 35th anniversary and track model have the revups in 05 model years. ALL 06 MT Z's have the revups.

 

On the 05's, only 35th and Track have the rev ups... all others including AT's still uses the 287hp engine... the above info might confuse some of you...

 

My 04.5 has a 6700rpm redline. I believe all 03-04 had 6700rpm redlines.

'05-06's rev-up motors were only 13more HP/300rpm more with less torque it was about the same in performance as previous years. It's subjective of course.

 

Becareful if you buy pre-owned 350Z's with the rev-up engine. Many of the previous owners (especially in CANADA) did not take care of the engine properly during the break-in period, and this would cause the engine to have substantial oil consumptions. This is a serious problem.. lots of people on this forum have it, but some don't.

I suggest you to get a 2003-2005. The '03 is much cheaper (around $27k CDN right now)

 

I don't think it's due to a poor break-in period. It just happens... kind of like gravity. Some ppl get it and some don't. So far on my rev up (11k miles) no oil consumption yet *knock on wood*.

 

'06 MT's are re-ups.. '06 AT's aren't..

 

hmm interesting....I live in Toronto so I plan on driving across the boarder to grab a used car from the states...it's really a lot cheaper with the exchange rate now

so do you guys know how much faster are the rev-up engines compared to the 03-04 engines? I'm still debating whether I should narrow down my choices to the rev-ups only or not...if the performance difference isn't significant it might not be worth it.

And what is this 04.5? I'm really confused..haha

 

My opinion is that the '05's are not much faster if at all. With the horsepower the car gain a tad of weight. It about equaled out I read on these pages.

The '05 was the first year with a different grill and the LED rear tail lights.

04.5 was a mid year production change adding such things as knee pads to the side of the console, modified transmission, and the feathering issue seemed to go away. I think there were a few other minor things as well.
My 04.5 has been without issue for 4 years. Knock on wood.

Hopefully, others can ping in with a better description for you.

Either way you can't go wrong. If it was me, I'd go for the '04.5 so I wouldn't have to worry that I got a oil burner or not. You just don't know until you drive it for a while. I feel really fortunate to have gotten this car hearing others experience.

If you change the wheels and tails it will look like the '06. Most people wouldn't notice the grill or rubberized control **** differences.

I own a 35th ann rev-up... i agree with a number of things already said.. i have more power (so to speak) but my car is heavier and i lost a TQ for greater HP.. it a horse a peace.. the benifits really only come to th fact you'll be owning a newer car.. thats all really.. unless you do go 35th ann model then you'll gain some options you wouldnt have gottin other wise..

only 35th ann model and 6sp man track model in 05 got the rev-up.. g/l

 

Good point. I keep forgetting that. No difference in the motor if it was not the track or aniv ed. The salesman in late '04 told me it was 287HP for auto and 300HP(rev-up) for stick. We found out later .... this wasn't the fact.

 

I own an 06 rev up and i've raced a few older models before I did any mods. I've raced several from a roll and from a dig. On average from 0-60 they have pulled about 1/2 - 3/4 car lengths ahead, when we hit third gear it's a slow creep faster. . . there is no absolute answer because racing has so many different variables but from my experience, older molders are faster off the line, rev-ups are faster up top. . . 1/4 mile I broke into high 13.90's with bad tread on stock tires.

 

That seems about right. I believe with the rev up motor it would perform better 65-110mph range as designed. On the open freeway, I believe a rev up would have the edge in passing etc...

 

'06 Rev up models also had lots of detail changes. I.e. better quality interior, improved suspension, reduced interior noise, etc. they have slightly less peak torque but a better i.e. flatter spread of torque.

 

As long as the internal's have been cared for and are mechanically sound, I say get either the revup or non-revup. It's all about the same anyway. I had an '04 for about 2 1/2 years before I got the '06. Stock for stock (performance-wise) they're about the same.
