Default Flywheel

My clutch is slipping badly, so I'm calling around getting some estimates for a new clutch assembly. However, I'm getting mixed signals regarding the stock flywheel. Can the stock flywheel be resurfaced??? Some dealers are telling me yes, others are telling me no. Either way, does the flywheel have to be replaced with the clutch? I'm looking to stay stock at this point. However, if I am going to have to replace the flywheel, then I might as well go aftermarket ($1,100 for an OEM flywheel - wrong!). Thanks in advance! I read a bunch of threads on this, but couldn't find an answer.

It's a dual mass flywheel and Nissan does not recommend that you try and resurface the flywheel.Go with a JWT flywheel. No it shouldn't have to be replaced unless it has unusual wear and tear on it.

I would just go aftermarket anyway. I'm eagerly waiting for my clutch to go out. 22k mi and still going strong.

I've had offers to help, but I think I'll wait for it to go naturally.

Thanks for the help! I bought the car about 7,000 miles ago, and I wasn't real happy when I could feel the clutch starting to go at 34,000 miles. The previous owner must have absolutely toasted the clutch. I don't expect really long life in a car like the Z, but I did expect the stock clutch to last 50K. Oh well, I have to get the car in for the rear axle clicking anyway...

From what I've read, our clutches last about 25k mi under normal conditions. 34k mi, you just may be one of the lucky ones. I wouldn’t consider that as a sign the owner toasted the clutch. Unless that was the second or third one.

If the car got 34k mi out of the stock clutch he may have babied it and that’s a good thing for you.

Don’t sweat the axle clicking TSB. I just took mine in a month ago and they fixed it without question.

I am at 75k and my clutch is still okay. I have hammered it.

Its demise is soon approaching with the installation of a turbo kit.

I just had to replace my clutch for the first time @ 52k on my 03. Getting estimates from local shops, they were saying I didnt need to get a new flywheel bc it could be resurfaced. After they got it all apart they found uneven wear on it (ie hot spots that caused high and low spots on it). Also because it was dual mass he said chalking it up on the resurface machine wasnt going to be easy. In the end I went with a JWT flywheel I ordered on my own. New clutch- $235. Flywheel- $398 Labor/tax-$430.

HOW LONG DO I NEED TO BREAK THE CLUTCH IN?? ANYONE KNOW?

52K, 75K, that's about what I expected to get out of the clutch. You got a pretty good deal on your install, Vencer. All the local shops I called around Columbus were more expensive than the dealer, and that's definitely the first time I've said that (I avoid taking the car to the dealer like its the plague). At this point, I'm going to play it by ear. If the flywheel doesn't need replaced, then I'm going to go with the stock clutch. If it does need replaced, then I'm probably going to go JWT.

Well, the flywheel's scorched, so I ordered the JWT combo. I wasn't planning on spending the money right now (I just bought tires last week), but I'm pumped about the upgrade!

Yea, the lighter clutch pedal, at least in my case ('03), is taking some getting used to. I have like 60 miles on it so far. When I first got in the car and hit the clutch to start it I almost sent it through the floor it was so soft. I thought for sure something was wrong but about 30 miles later I started to get the hang of it. I'm taking it easy right now and I cant wait to punch the gas and see how it really feels. How long do I need to wait???
