Default Visual difference between Rev-Up and non Rev-Up

I have the opportunity to purchase two 'salvaged' VQ35DE based cars. The person who has them now knows nothing about them as far as specs and performance.

I believe they both have Rev-Up motors, but I am not certain. They are both 2005 G35 coupes and both motors have cam covers that look to have 4 cams in them. On my '04 non Rev-up my cam cover only looks to have two cams in it (one circle per side, as opposed to two circles per side on the salvaged cars.

Is this a reliable way to spot a Rev-up motor?

I would be willing to buy a longblock if one is a rev-up. I am looking into doing a build and swap.

I am local.

OK, I did some research and I believe that all 6mt 2005 coupes have the Rev-Up motor.

Not sure about 350Z but all 6MT 05+ G35 (Coupe/Sedan) are all Revup.

OP....you are correct. The revup has different cam timing gear covers. the cover looks like it is hiding 2 circles as opposed to 1. here's a pic of the front timing cover of a revup.

That's 2006. In 2005, only the 35th Anniversary and Track model have the 300 hp motor. If it doesn't have Brembo brake calipers, it's not a rev-up.

lawndart,

KP said coupes because he was referring to the G35 coupes. Actually, ALL 6mt G35s (coupes and sedans) got the revups - starting in 2005. The 6MT sedan had the revup in 2005-2006. The 6MT coupe had it from 2005-2007.

Sorry. I love that pic. I'll like it even if I ever build this motor.

You said you bought both cars, not just engines, correct? If so, why not just have the seller check the tachometer and tell you where the redline is?

^^ Good idea. Whats the redline of the Rev-up motor?

I should have at least one of the cars today, if not both of them. One of the cars is missing some glass, so if it continues to rain today I won't get that one.

Revup has the redline at 7000 rpm.

Remember that revups were only put into '05 6MT G35C, autos had non revup engines.

Oh, and both non revup VQ35DE and revup VQ35DE have 4 cams, those are DOHC engines.

I believe the difference in the timing cover is from the fact that the Rev-Up motor has variable cam timing on both the intake and exhaust valves. The non Rev-up motors don't adjust timing on both sets of valves.
