Default Considering buying REV UP motor (is this possible?)

ok i have a guy that is willing to sell me a brand new 350z REV UP motor (just short block w/ head only) no wires or ecu for $800... he also has the normal 350 VQ35 motors for $700 NEW on crate still saran wrapped...i am considering using the rev up for the turbo package... there are only a few questions i have concerning the motor...

1. is there any way to tell a rev up vs. the original VQ35 if so how?
2. what year z does this rev up come from and will it have any issues bolting up to my 05 tranny?
3. what ecu should i run if the swap is even possible?
4. if i went with the swap, what issues might i run into or should/could be expected?

thanks a bunch.

Can I ask why you are buying the rev up motor?

the revup is 300hp out the box and i want to assemble the turbo & build the motor out of the car and i wanted to use a NEW motor for the turbo and keep my motor in case i run into any issues... my current motor is still under 9,000 miles. but from what i heard, the revup has better head flow.

variable exhaust valve timing might help make power with some cams... guess OP has a point. Just ask someone that know's the VQ35DE-R in and out....and fix the oil consumption thing...lol

Seems awfully cheap for a new short block.

i know, its a killer deal... i just want to make sure im getting what i should be... im assuming that there is no engine code on the block to tell them apart right? nothing that i would just be able to look at? is there a code that i can get off the motor and call a dealer to see what it is?

Lots of Revup's are out there but be careful. Most of them are dealer take outs from oil consuption. I've seen some on the forum for sale. Buy whatever is currently in your car and build it.

Not to try and talk you out of this decision. I will just give you my opinion if you will on what I have seen between the two engines. Granted internally yep, they may be different. Stock for stock the revup does make more power. But standard DE is no slouch with a simple valvetrain upgrade and nice camshaft. To date the DE has made the most NA power I have seen on my dyno.

A DE with basic bolt ons and Tomei 268 cams I have seen it make 320whp at 6500rpms. If I had rev limit control on this car. I am pretty sure it would have made close to 330whp. ON otherwise stock heads will post the plot tomorrow. Not trying to turn you off on what you are doing just want to help you make a good decision.

+1. DO NOT buy a rev up. It's probably a V1 and even the V2s are showing consumption issues. The motor has questionable rings even after the "fix". There are a lot of folk rueing that one single year (05 Anniversary and 06). If you want to drop in a motor go with the 07.

^its just that there has been two crazy NA build threads on this board. Both barely made over 300whp. You come on here an act like making 320whp is easy and that you could get another 10whp just from reving a bit higher( which is weird since the VQ makes power before redline and power drops closer to redline)

please prove me wrong though, ive love to see it done. Look at my sig, see what it took to make 338..........FI

If I hadn't done it I wouldn't talk about it. The VQ will make power above 7k with the right cams and the right plenum combo. Cams are definitely a big part on making power at higher rpms. I don't discredit your 338 whp with FI btw. Again like I said... I do this for the fun.

jermaine is also on a dynopak dyno. he definitely has some credibility here.

they tend to read higher.

i have seen the most power though consistently on the rev up engines.

thx everyone... looking forward to seeing some #'s... on the other hand... burning oil does not sound much fun... especially since i am going FI. that could cause big issues down the line... maybe missing out on 20-30 hp might not be that bad of a idea as long as i am able to maintain reliability and piece of mind?

kinna sad... i have a 35th anniversary ed. z... but mine is only a base model... would have been nice if i already walked into a rev-up. not like that would have changed the oil issues tho. but the traction control wudda been a perk

I wouldnt buy any of them, the revup has oil consumption problems.
