Depending on how you interpret what he said, it may or may not be powershifting. I understood what he was saying as rev-matching the gear perfectly such that the shifter slides right into place without use of the clutch. Same as the technique you see used in semi's. Ripping it from gear to gear while WOT, however...
That being said, not every driving technique that doesn't use the clutch is considered 'powershifting'.

When done correctly there isn't all that much more wear on the baulk rings and gears, if we're talking about the first method.

sigh.... you can shift any car with out using the clutch, drive the car like normal and as soon as you let off on the gas the tranny will EASILY let you shift out of gear, if you time it right you can easily shift into the next gear, its all about matching your revs and it will not hurt a single thing.

I'm not saying to do full throttle runs and slam the gears, just do a simple 1-2 gear shift with out using the clutch, its easy and everyone should learn how to do it.

My point is if he shifts with out using the clutch and it shifts with ZERO sounds, then chances are the problem is part of the clutch.

Default Tranny noise

I also experience that noise when shifting from 1st to 2nd. Sometimes even from 2nd to 3rd (though rarely). I'm getting all my gear oil changed today. I'm getting the oil on the tranny and the diff changed to Mobil 1 75W90. I'm doing this as a maintenace but hopefully it will make a difference. What I have noticed though, is that it mostly does it in cold temperatures. Not sure in what ways can temparature affect this?

My 06' with brand new "updated" trans and lcutch with 400 miles on it does it, too. Warmed up- seems to go away. My old trans didn't do it... maybe it actually takes 35,000 miles or so to finnnaly break it in.

I don't think it's a break in, it's how you put it into 2nd. Downshift/Revmatch from 3rd to 2nd doesn't happen. It's the angle and the force, I get the clunck 1 out of 15 times now that I got it down. Still happens but not as often. 07 Z BTW

Default clunk noise

xNeo is right. I have noticed that angle and force do play a role as to whether or not you get the clunk noise. I had my tranny and diff fluid changed yesterday to Mobil 1 75W90 and I did notice that my upshifts and downshifts go in a bit smoother. Most importantly, the car drives better; smoother accelaration. It feels like the engine were getting more power to the wheels.

Ya my 06 enthusiast does it too. I noticed that if im going slow in first and push the clutch in it makes a rattle noise. But it only does it in first to second after that it goes away. Its quite annoying especially when u roll up to a car meet and u push your clutch in and get that loud "Clunk" noise

this is weird man.. .?

I have an 05... im just approaching 23,000 miles.. and TODAY.. is the first time ive EVER heard this sound..

as most people have described above.. while accelarating in 1st and then "push" the clutch in.. I DO NOT SHIFT YET... I hear this "pop" or "clunk" sound come from underneath the shifter, sounds like right under the boot..? almost like plastic rubing..?

then yes sometimes, but not as often from 2nd to 3rd..? only when I push the pedal in... actual shifting does not produce the sound.. its the pushing in of the pedal "between" shifts from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd..

im no mechanic... but VERY attentative to any news sounds.. that Ive never heard before.. and I must say.. for it to have all of a sudden appeared out of nowhere... is ******* annoying..!!

car otherwise drives fine.. no grinding, no sqweeking, or any resistance of any sort.. just this ******* poping noise... as the pedal is pushed in?

what is this..? if it was always there then fine.. but this happend for the first time today.. and it did not go away.. Im hoping when I leave for work tomorrow it will be gone... but I doubt it..! I hate that ****.. its like computers lol.. one day they work... the next they dont..?

thanks
Tony..

my 07 always has that clunking noise when shifting from 1-2 but ONLY after a cold start (when i first start my car in the morning). And even then it only lasts a minute or two until the car warms up and goes away completely. I'd be extremely annoyed if it happened all the time. if the clunking doesn't go away after a couple minutes of driving, you should definitely get it checked out.

its weird..

cause even if the car was cold or hot.. yesterday.. was the first time I heard this..

but, I just got back to my office.. from a longer period of driving and it does seem to go completely.. when the car has been driven for a while..?

but still.. it was never there before..?

I guess its nothing.. cause there is no affect on the car in any form...

Well.. dont understand why it started to beginning with.. but im more then happy.. cause as of yesterday this sound is completely gone..!!

I did not do anything.. it just stoped.. on its own? because of the "pop" sound that was occuring.. like plastic rubin underneath the boot..

im assuming there may have been a lack of lubrication on one piece..? now maybe after a couple of days.. the lub or crease.. just made its way back over the rubing part..

this "clunk" sound that people have been mentioning coming out of 1st gear is normal.. and yes is usually produced when the engine is cold..

the "pop" sound that I noticed was coming directly from underneath the shifter..

the "clunk" sound when putting in the clutch from 1st gear.. is from the gearbox.. and has been there since ive had the car..

Haven't really had this problem but just swapped out my clutch/fly for the JWT combo with Redline MTL/ML fluid and now i get this so called clunk and also it hard to go into 4th and 5th unless throwing it @ the right angels but going into 6th i can feel the shifter hitting the gate that protects you from going into 6th. Is this normal? Everybody i've hurd switching from stock to redline fluid has said it felt better to shift and mine actually feels worse! Could my JWT combo be doing this?

you're shifter plate is misaligned. did you have the clutch master cylinder tsb performed on your car? the shifter plate fix is relatively easy and i remember seeing it in the 350z general forum like less than a month ago.

No i haven't had that TSB performed, I didn't know there was one. The only TSB's I knew of were for the gas line, Metallic clicking in the rear, and the infamous tire cupping.

I'll check that forum for the shifter plate.

mine does it too and it only has 15,000 km on it (06 6mt)
i haven't noticed it with cold too much but it's usually when i
- feel some resistance going into 2nd from 1st
- cruising real slow (1~ rpm on 1st) and then punch in the clutch to stop (stop using the break)
- sometimes from 2nd to 3rd

it's very annoying indeed

weather could play a part but i doubt it. i would just take out the clutch and double check it but thats just me lol. My friends turbo'd rxs had the same issue and it turned out to be something with pushing in the clutch and the cam moving against the wall. Yet again it is a honda
