I did a lot of searching and researching before deciding I wanted to do it...

then last friday I bought an open diff and had it welded and replaced the vlsd.

I thought a few might be interested in the results.

Why did I do it? because was less than $200 and a perfect lock, not relying on mechanics or viscous.

How does it feel when drifting? awesome, kicks out easier, holds a drift easier, is just a whole lot of fun

How does it feel daily driving? absolutely fine, kick it out when I want to, but drive normal when I want to, very predictable cornering

Does it feel weird at all? yes, lol, it chirps on tight turns, gets a bit splashy on a fast tighter corner, but is predictable, you always know what it is going to do

Is it dangerous in driveability? no, I don't feel unsafe ever, I feel like I always know what it is going to do now

Is it fun? yes

Does a welded diff hold or ever break? No. I had a shop called Toy Box Auto do it, they do four wheeling truck diffs that hold thousands of pounds of low geared torque, it will last forever... or as forever as anything can last on a car, ha.

 

welded diff = drifting.....

 

also works pretty well for HPDE/Time Attack since it makes heat not an issue and makes your turn in more predictable.

I'll put it to that test soon.

i googled, searched on here, some other places.... didn't see anyone with a 350z and welded diff.

Maybe 350z owners just generally have a bit more money and always purchase aftermarket? not sure... but I like it welded

 

I know someone who did this on their 240, first time for a Z though.

 

yeah, 240's and other popular chassis do it all the time. half the diffs at every drift event are welded.

 

I know numerous people that do this on their mudding trucks. Never on a Z.

+1 for being the flagship, or at least the only known one now.

 

It doesn't get annoying driving with it at all. The guy I know whenever he makes a turn it chirps. I had an old truck with a welded diff and it was not very fun to drive on the street.

 

Old concept with Older cars that clunked anyway.ROUND track and drifting yah.I woould never do to a street car.

 

welded diff equals slower through corners. this would never be done for a grip car trying to go as fast as possible.


would be great for drag racing and drifting, we weld base model diffs for drifting all the time.


always faster with a high quality LSD through corners.


also, it can break, be VERY careful in the rain, it will spin out very very easy. also sucks pushing if anything ever breaks.

you're not the first. AJ's is welded, as well as Blake Fuller.

 

doesn't work well at all actually - great for drift, but as Jeremy noted, it will be slower than a properly setup aftermarket diff unless its a very long track without much turning

would be interesting to see before/after times vs a stock open

Wow good luck with them. They totally screwed me over on a LSD they were selling. Jerked me around, kept stalling. Apparently they sold something they never even had in hand, then he blamed it on Fed-ex, then DHL, then his part time help.

 

my guess would be a base if he has an open diff...also, why would welding the diff. throw any codes?
