Ok so a few months ago i went and had Pep Boys flush my MT gearbox fluid, I told them to use synthetic, well I am starting to feel like they didn't....

When the engine is hot, or it is hot out and when costing, I will get a feeling in the shifter like there is somehting hitting it from below, and there is a faint sound like a gear rubbing on it.

A call to the local stealership leaves me believing that my gear box is about to die and i will be stuck to foot a bill I cannot afford.

I have made an appointment with pep boys this evening to get the fluid changed, regardless of what they originally put in.

my question/concern is:

Will changing the fluid now stop/reduce the issue at hand, or am I completely screwed?!?!

 

Please stop taking your car to Pep Boys.

You have a suspicion they did it wrong the first time, why take it again? Find a reputable shop in your area (not the dealership), take it there, and let them look at it.

 

Better yet, drain the fluid and refill with quality fluid of your choice, yourself. It is a 20 minute job that involves removing two plugs - thats it.

 

Your first and worst mistake was bringing the car to Pep Boys.

You have "Boys" straight out of school if your lucky to work and learn on your car. Bad bad bad mistake friend.

 

If you suspect that Pep boys did mess up something, or even didn't put the synthetic transmission fluid, why in the world would you bring the car back to them? Don't tell me you are serious....

ok, fluid changed....problem is now less pronounced, but still present

Changing the manual tranny fluid is really easier that it would seem. The way I do mine:

Drive the front of my car upon Rhino Ramps (to avoid scraping the lower part of the facia,I line up a board and then a brick up to the ramps to slowly gain height).

Loosen the FILL plug first (to make sure you can remove it before you drain all the fluid out and it`s too late).

Then remove the drain plug and allow old fluid to drain into an oil catch pan.

Refill the tranny through fill hole (I use one of those O`Reilly`s $3 hand pumps that screws onto the oil quarts. I usually pour the gear oil into an empty oil quart. The hand pump is made to fit standard sized oil quarts........some gear oils have odd shaped quart bottles).

Slowly back car off of ramps,drive,and ENJOY :^)
