Default 3rd Gear Syncro 2k3 Track

Shifting into 3rd gear grinds consistently.

So I just bought a car from a private party. It had a transferable non-manufacture warranty. The car has ~44,000 miles on it. I'm waiting on the warranty transfer paperwork to be processed, but until then should I go to a Nissan dealership? Since the car is still under 60,000 miles will they replace the transmission without me having to wait on the aftermarket warranty? I read something on here about it being a common issue and that there is an upgraded transmission (part#32010-CD009); does this transmission cost extra? Advice please?

Manufacturer Drivetrain warranty should transfer. This is a pretty common problem I've seen on 2003 models; take it to a dealer and see what they say. Early on Nissan slapped in new complete transmissions, not so sure they will do that today - might want to rebuild it, which of course would suck compared to a replacement. Push for the latter.

The original Manufacturer warranty should be transferable. Check your glovebox docs, there should be a doc smaller than the Owner's Manual with Warranty detail.

If the dealer you talk to balks, contact another one. So much of what is covered in any gray zone depends on how much the dealer wants to push your case, he needs to get the pre-approval, after confirming diagnosis, for the reimbursement for the parts and labor allowance to repair/replace.

Good luck. So far I haven't personally had any real issues getting things done where warranty still applied.

Thanks for the advice. I went to the dealership, and have an appointment scheduled for next Monday. The manufacture powertrain warranty expires this month on the 20th, I guess I'm lucky!

I'm about to pick up a high mileage 2003, and there are no noticeable problems with any of my gears or tranny in general, but i guess this is kind of a more general question; how is Nissan on good-will repairs? i know, for example, Acura will replace parts under a free-of-charge goodwill repair after warranties have expired, just in the sake of keeping a good rep with consumers - just something thatd be good to know
