Default HELP!!! I can switch gears without pressing the clutch!!!

Well there was a hurricane shutter on the highway and no way that i could have avoided it. so it dented my passenger rim and my tire is also flat.

But now after what just happened...when I drive... i can shift gears WITHOUT pressing on the clutch... if i take my foot off the pedal and the car is in neutral, i can shift from 1st to 2nd to 3rd, etc etc.... and the car WONT STALL either if i leave in 1st. What's going on? there is no body damage to the car in the front and also on the bottom since the plastic cover is there. There is also a leak underneath the passenger side of the car...

would that be why??

Here is a picture of the rim...

the rim is a 3 piece....mind the dirtyness... haven't drove her and washed her for a month.

The worst part is... i've been driving a different car to school because i didnt want to put mileage on the car.. and THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I TOOK THE CAR OUT FOR A MONTH...

Fixable???

I'd figure to fix it.. it will be about 400~500...plus a new tire.. 200...OUCH...
so if you know a great rim repair shop that is... hopefully not that expensive around miami or miramar.. please list it!!!

its normal to be able to shift gears without the clutch as long as you are rev matching. sorry for the damage to your rim.

how did you figure out that you could change gears without the clutch in the first place, and why were you trying if you didn't already know this?

well I was making a turn and i usually push the shift **** up a little before i actually push on the clutch. and it slipped out without me having to press on the clutch. this has never happened to me before so I tried it again and i would be able to shift into any gear without having to press the clutch down.

kramykram is right about being able to gears without pressing on the clutch if the rev is matching. But i guess what i was happening with me is that i was shifting gears when the rpm was under 2. I'm still confused as to why the car wouldnt stall with the rpm being so low in 3rd, 4th gear.

Take the rim to Turbax, they do quality work. Though I am unsure if they fix that kind of damage. If they do, I would definitely trust their work.

I shift gears all the time without using the clutch.....down up shifts and downshifts, but as someone else said, you have to "rev match" perfectly or else you get a grind. You can't shift fast wehen doing it, it is more of a casual shift. for example, on upshifts, I let off the gas and push the shifter into neutral, then as the rpms drop just enough, I push the shift into the next gear. when done correctly, the shifter slides right into gear! down shifts are similar, but you have to blip the throttle to bring the rpms up to make the sownshift happen smoothly.

yeah, the shifting depends on a lot of things. can you do it from a stop? is it only upshifting or downshifting too? if you can downshift without the clutch or revmatching then something is f'ed, but if its just an upshift then its completely normal and would actually be really easy under 2k RPM because that low the gears are all at a relatively similar RPM anyway, which would make the clutchless shift fairly smooth. again, we need more info on when and how you can do it/what you are doing

also, did you see a hole in the tire? if not then the tire's probly fine, its just flat from being off the bead due to the bent rim

Yea I think what I was doing was rev matching but I don't recall on what rpm I was at. As for the shifting.. i was at low RPM's...thus me being able to place into any gear that I tried. I only tried upshifting but never downshifting as I do not want to mess anything up more if there is something messing up.

"Sort of good news"... when I tried placing it in 5th gear, it did grind so nothing is wrong.

As for the leak, it isn't fuel cause it does not smell like gas. Prob the AC line as someone suggested or water... Would i have to go to the dealership to get that patched up? And also, if it were water... what would the water be used for?

any water there would be just from the AC condensor, perfectly normal and nothing wrong. from those pics though, id have to say that its not any refrigerant, the AC lines dont run there AND they run at a pretty high pressure. pretty much if one is leaking you would know more than just from fluid dribbling it could be water from the condensor, im not sure where that water tends to run, but its usually down the firewall. AFAIK those two lines are fuel and EVAP related, it might not smell like gas just cause what you are smelling is pretty much completely evaporated and dry. if you start the car, does it visually drip from there? if so you should try to get a little in like a cup or something and smell it then. im pretty sure if its leaking from that clip its gas

Thanks Hoooper for the help.

Well I parked my car backwards so that if it was gas...it would have dripped out from that clip from the decline..but no dripping. Left car on also for about 5 minutes..no dripping.

Parked the car upwards.. and still no dripping.

Also, there hasn't been no change in the fuel gauge last couple of times i drove it...so I guess no fuel was lost, thus meaning no hole from the lines in that clip

I think im just worrying too much.

Thanks for the help guys.

yeah, it sounds like you just had condensation running down to that clip. i know how you feel, ive had that scare before, looking under my car and seeing a bunch of wet on the firewall and ground. that a/c condensation can be trippy. glad everything is still in good shape
