Default Nismo Camshafts - How good R they?

Just wondering if anyone has installed these yet... Since I've got a Track w/ VDC, it's the ONLY Nismo parts I can get for the damn thing. I was just wondering if they are worth the 1600 bucks (Read as: What kinda HP and where in the powerband.)

I assume it doesn't void the existing warranty, but probably has to be installed by a dealer to qualify (at $85 per hour...ouch!).

Short term, I was thinking about the brake pads since Brembo seems to be a little slow in offering upgraded pads for this car....

nismo cams are not warrantied; thats why most dealers wont install them.

i just picked up the nismo cams and will have them installed in about 2-3 weeks.

and there are a couple of dealers who will sell them for less than 1600

why would you pay 1500-1600 when you can get the tomei's which will make way more power at the wheels and come with titanium retainers for the same price? doesn't make much sense to me.

Gee, where did you you get those from. Just kidding. I've driven a couple cars now with the Nismo cams. These cars come alive with this Mod... and they pass calif emissions at the tail pipe. Doesn't mean they're smog legal though. We are running a sale on these right now so PM me if I can help.

but you still forget that even 1300 is 200$ more than the tomei's and they still create less power. i'm not in CA so i dont care if my car will pass smog but it most likely will if it ever had to be smogged even with the new cams. i just don't get the logic of paying more and getting less.

I'm sorry I must admit I'm unfamiliar with Tomei cams. Is there any ECU mod's needed? Can someone give me a link where I can read up on them as to educate myself? Thanks.

well how much MORE whp are we talking about here? i, for one, will not put up with any type of lopey idle, so if i were to get the most mild form of the tomeis, then how much more hp? really, i'd like to know.

and i am in CA so i DO care about passing emissions

my guess is that the more aggressive tomeis will not pass smog, and the most mild form probably will.

and yes i got my parts from jeff, who has the best prices for nismo IMO.

btw jeff, you can see the tomeis being sold here: http://store.yahoo.com/sgpracing-sto...ctronics4.html

they dont have much info tho

I'm also toiling over getting these cams or not. I've only read one article on them--saying roughly a 10 hour install for 15 hp. I can't decide if that's really worth it to me. But then again, I don't want to have to worry about the ECU needing reprogramming to have the car run properly, etc.

I'm sort of looking around right now. If you want, I'll let you know what I find--just PM me to remind me.

Right now I'm leaning towards Nismo's camshaft set being that is is proven to make 15 rwhp. I'm trying to coerce as much power out of the engine as possible NA wise (w/out new connecting rods for higher compression though). I have yet to see ANY numbers on the tomei cams. Of course I wouldn't rule them out, all I wanna see is some solid hp & tq gains

Good Link...Thanks!

Sounds kinda what I'm looking for: nothing too wild, but will still make a difference. It makes me wonder if Nismo has an intake (not airbox) kit in the works to coincide with the cams...maybe even some high-flow heads? Woo Hoo!! Since the Z sees the track most of the time, I was really glad to see that the low RPMs aren't affected.

Well, let me know how that install goes...I'll be doing the work myself too (I don't like people messing with my cars).

Oh, also let me know if it changes the exhaust note. I love it as it is and would hate to wreck that!

i wont be doing the install myself, but paying a shop to do it. i've messed around with cams before for honda/acuras, but for the z i'll leave to the professionals; no time and beyond my skill level i think.

the specs of the nismo cams are less duration and less lift than the mildest tomei cams.

i've chatted with a few owners of the biggest tomei grinds and they are at a 30whp increase with just the cams. the idle is not loopey and is barely noticeable. if you ask the guys at SGP racing they will tell you what the gains are. it's proven that a bigger cam will make more power. if you want the most then get the tomei's. if you are willing to compromise and pay more then get the nismo's. as for me i want the most power possible which is why i'm getting the tomei's.

Are you sure about that? I'm sure I read the Nismo cams are something like 262deg 10.8mm. The Tomei IIRC are 256deg 10.2mm for the mildest, 260deg 10.8mm for the next and can't recall the final one.

Default Specs...

Nismo 262 with 10.2 mm lift...

Tomei mild 256 with 10.2 lift
med 264 with 10.2 lift
race 268 with 10.5 lift

Tomei med I think is the one to have... Would like to compare to Nismo cam dyno though first........
