Questioning my oil Cooler Install

Question Questioning my oil Cooler Install

I recently installed a Mishimoto oil cooler kit...and I may have some issues. When I first started the car after the install I immediatly noticed a "whining" noise that is dependent on RPM. I was puzzeled as to why it makes this new noise. I have also removed the factory oil warmer/cooler...which I doubt has anything to do with it. Just out of curiosity, I opened the filler cap while the car was running and looked down into the valve cover. I'm no expert nor do I know what it should look like,...but it doesnt look like theres much oil going to the head(s)...Oil pressure is fine on the stock guage...and the dipstick reads half way between low and max....Any input is much appreciated...

check the oil return from cooler to the engine, make sure you have pressure on your return line.....maybe there is a blockage in the line

Double check your installation and flow direction. Oil goes into the outside of the filter and comes out the center. Is the thermostat in the right place? Maybe you hooked it up so the thermostat is blocking all flow when cold. (You do have a thermostat, right? Oil that's too cold is bad, too.)

No I don't have a thermostatic sandwich plate as of right now...so I figured the flow direction would not matter...heres a pic for reference...

Now would be a good time to put that thermostat in. And, you might as well put a remote filter in there as well while you're at it and get rid of the tiny filter meant for a lawnmower.

It sounds like you have to pull it apart anyway to see why there's no oil flowing.

What if I were to open the ports below the two hose fittings before removing the whole thing to check for flow...?

Actually Im gonna start from the begining by removing the whole sandwhich plate and screwing the filter onto the block and refil it with oil, run it and check it....then I'll check the cooler lines...I'll be back in an hour or two...Thanks for the help asterix

Default Update:

I removed the sandwhich plate and put the filter back on without the factory warmer/cooler. The noise is gone and everything looks better again...Now its obviously the cooler/sand which plater causing the noise...but what part of it I'm not sure...could it be all the elbows creating a restriction? I blew through the lines and nothing seems to be blocking them...I may order a mocal thermostat plate and use that instead...and see if the noise comes back...

It is a Mishimoto Complete Oil Cooler Kit...$220 Shipped from ebay...I didn't even know they made oil coolers untill I saw it ....

Does anyone else hear a noise after installing an oil cooler? I am worried about it stressing the oil pump and having it prematurely fail...

hmmmmm you have to think that gravity is helping oil pump out....well on your pic which is the return line top or bottom, if its the top i wouldnt worry so much about pre fail......just my opinion

hey are those stillen sway bars?

I had a "harmonic hum" coming from my setrab cooler after I installed it. But it only happend @ 2k rpm when oil temps were at least 180f. It didn't do it any other time.

So I did like you and checked for any blockage and found none. So I kept driving it. Over time, the hum got less and less, now I don't hear it at all. I think there must've been a small air pocket in there that had to work it's way out... Just my 2 cents.

Actually, the return line is at the bottom. The way it is now, oil flows into the top and ou the bottom....I will switch the lines at the sandwhich plate and see if this makes a difference...They are Hotchkis sways...

I'm in NYC btw...

Yea Im getting a noise at all RPM with the cooler installed...I'll change some things and keep you guys posted...

I have the ARC cooler. When I first start the engine, there is a 1-2 second pause, I hear the whining noise you're describing, then the pressure guage rises to normal position. It's also present when I'm pulling out the garage from a standstill. Other than that, I hear no whining while I drive at normal speeds. I do not believe there is blockage, as I have had no pressure problems, and the cooler is obviously circulating oil as it gets extremely warm to the touch after running the car.

So the feed line should go into the bottom of the cooler...and come out the top back to the filter correct?
