The next mod I'm going to do is upgrading the ignition delivery for my car. I've already decided on a HKS Twin Power Ignition for the distribution and MSD 8.5mm wires and blaster coil, but I'm still don't know who or where to buy spark plugs. I've already e-mailed Denso and NGK, but haven't gotten a response back. So I ask you guys, do know who else makes Iridium plugs that'll fit the Z? Any help would be appreciated.

however, irridium plugs are not a waste of money. I love mine. I went denso IKH22, 2 steps colder due to my insatiable desire to spray noble gases into my intake. IKH20's would be cool for the N/A folks... denso part number 5344 available at Monarch Products 888-800-9629.

 

I can get a hold of the Denso Iridium's. They actually have three heat ranges for your car. These sucka's are expensive.

What three heat ranges do you have and which is the best?

 

Stock heat range - IKH16 - Good for NA engines
1 heat range colder - IKH20 - Good for FI engines
2 heat range colder - IKH22 - Good for FI engines 10psi +

 

Alright I know what plugs I need now when I go FI.

 

Is it alright if I start off with the IKH22s, or should I go with a lower heat range? These things are too expensive and I don't want to have to switch them out if I go FI in the future if I can avoid it.

 

You could start out that way, but it I was you I would start off in the one heat range colder. Getting to 10 psi on these engines is not a wise thing to do esp. if the bottom end is stock. A one heat range plug will work fine for you. It will even work fine if you run over 10psi.

I have used Denso Iridiums in a few FI apps and they are great plugs (if not the best). But the primary reason to use these and to spend the extra money (they are pretty pricey for a sparkplug )is to avoid mis-fires caused by high cylinder pressure. Since the VQ uses coil overs , Iridiums are an easy way to improve spark efficency. If you are NA , I am not so sure you are going to see any notable imporvements. The factory plugs are most likely doing the job fine when NA. I would save the money for the FI installation (or N2O), then use the Iridiums.

But hey if you got the extra beans go for it.

 

hell, I once spent 150 on a set of plugs for my 91tt from Stillen, cause I thought they were 25 a set, not each, and figured I would splurge for the $25

and no, I didn't notice a difference.

 

i have a few Denso iridium IKH16 on orders rite now
they have dynos on their site claiming around 4-8 hp gains on different cars
those bimmers forums(BMW) even said they got up to 10 hp gain with denso iridium plugs
my friend with a civic got IK20s and he said the difference was very noticeable

denso is so much better than NGK becoz NGK only contains around 15% of iridium

Do note that Denso Iridiums do not useally have as long a service life as extended life factory plugs. The Iridium can offer two improvement depending upon tip design:

a) better spark and performance , if the tip is designed with reduced mass.

b) extended life and durablity, if the tip were designed with extra mass.

The Denso Iridiums are designed with a) in mind, so service intervals can be as low as 25k miles , definately not the 100k miles that many modern autos claim (fat tip platinums).

I'll also get my Water Injection commnet in here. WI can greatly extend plug life and efficiency by keeping tips cooler and with less carbon build-up.

 

Interesting to note that it is theorized that all iridium came to earth when a giant meteor struck waht is not the mexican yucatan peninsula . So these plugs really are "out-of-this world"
