better buy yourself a second transmission in case the first one goes out (like many 6MTs do anyway) since by doing this, nissan will not cover you for replacement and you would have to eat any costs of replacing it yourself. best to have a second one on stand by

may need a different starter, wiring harness might not play nice with it either. you will need new flywheel bolts, tranny mounts are different and one might bolt on while the other is welded on (possibly, has happened to me but not sure if thats normal). will need to do a little custom dash wiring, as the clutch depressed sensor is on the dash harness not the main ECU harness. since youre getting a new ECU youll need to get the car to a dealership to get the immobilizer reprogrammed. a couple other little things will come up, undoubdtedly. make sure your mechanic doesnt drop the flywheel and dent the timing ring, then d1ck around for 7 months while he tries to figure out why it wont start, all the while charging you out the anus

Totally not worth the expense. Get a different car with MT, or live with the crappy auto.

I bet he can find a 20,000$ 350z, trade his in for 20,000(if he can get that) or sell it privately on auto trader. Owe 10,000 and he will sill owe 30,000 overall on a car that 6mt.. Still be in the same hole but... I think you can do some trade like this.

the point is that it wont cost him 10k to do the swap. even having GTM do it isnt that much, and IMO that is a price that can be seriously cut down by buying used and doing the work yourself

Thanks for the useful replies, to those who provided them... Looks like it will be a lot of work, but I could spend a couple months over the winter months doing it.
Anyway no bank is going to do a loan with that much negative equity. I'd have to put $10K down... maybe in another 6 months I can do it. But i'd still be wasting more money than switching to a manual. Even paying someone to do it would be cheaper.
I'm going to try to trade it in again in a few months once it gets closer to winter, but if I cant manage it even with (hopefully about $8K downpayment) i'll probably start the process of a tranny swap.
Because it is. I do a lot of autocross and tracking the car, its just much more enjoyable to have complete control. Getting those perfect rev-matched downshifts... its just, part of the fun driving experience! Not to mention having all control is good because you never get frustrated waiting for your car to do what you want it to. No matter how much you mod the auto in the Z, it's not going to be a Ferrari F430 with the F1 automatic gearbox. I KNOW for a fact I will enjoy the car so much more with a manual. At this point i'd rather go back to a FWD car with a 6 speed manual. And thats saying a lot.
